Why were people yelling “Chicken Jockey” at the movie?
The scene and its short line were easy to recognize and repeat, and social-media posts and reaction videos helped circulate the moment. But reports did not establish one definitive origin or explain how many viewers joined in. ABC News quoted film critic Luke Goodsell saying, “Social media is fuelling it”; that is his interpretation, not a measured finding about what caused the trend. ABC Radio National’s The Screen Show host Jason Di Rosso put the uncertainty plainly: “It’s hard to know why they’re doing it.” ABC News also cited filmmaker Jamie Tram’s suggestion that some participants may have wanted to record reactions for social media.
What happened at screenings—and were police called?
Yes, police were called in at least one reported case, but the incidents were venue-specific and should not be taken to mean that police routinely attended screenings. April 2025 coverage described both enthusiastic communal reactions and conduct that disrupted other patrons or damaged theater property.

Australia: a screening paused and a separate police call
ABC News reported that at a screening in Forest Hill, Victoria, audience members threw popcorn, toilet paper, flour and other items during the scene. One attendee said the manager stopped the film and security were called; she said people who had not participated received refunds and complimentary tickets.
ABC reported a separate incident at a cinema in Erina, New South Wales, where police were called after an alleged altercation between two adult men and two 14-year-old boys. Brisbane Water Police told ABC the matter related to people “throwing popcorn” and said officers were still looking into it at the time of publication. United States: venue-specific rules and appeals
Good Morning America reported that Township Theatre in Washington Township, New Jersey, required minors to attend with an adult after the theater reported vandalism and complaints from families. The same report reproduced a Megaplex disclaimer warning that disruptive patrons could be removed by police and charged for property damage. These were actions and warnings from particular venues, not a general cinema policy. Good Morning America
In Florida, ClickOrlando reported that Oviedo Mall management appealed to patrons to respect the space, staff and other moviegoers. The outlet also reported that Regal planned a special “Chicken Jockey” viewing day at participating locations for April 20, 2025. How did theaters respond to disruption?
Reported responses ranged from asking patrons to behave respectfully to adding staff, stopping a screening and setting venue-specific attendance rules. Palace Cinemas chief executive Benjamin Zeccola told ABC that the communal reaction could be fun, but that the company also faced extra staffing and cleanup. He said a screen damaged after drinks were thrown needed replacement, estimating its cost at $50,000. That was Zeccola’s estimate for a particular screen, not an industry-wide repair figure. ABC News
Zeccola described the communal response as “quite hilarious” and “pretty innocent fun.” His positive assessment of the shared excitement sits alongside the cleanup and damage he also described; it does not mean throwing objects or disrupting other people’s viewing was harmless.
