In a November 2019 interview, Artie Lange said he viewed his damaged nose as a reminder of his past drug use and a possible warning to young people. He also worried that pain after reconstruction could tempt him to take pain medication, and said he could breathe adequately at the time.

What Lange said about leaving his nose unrepaired

On The Joe Rogan Experience in November 2019, Lange explained that the appearance of his nose had meaning to him beyond appearance. He said, “part of me doesn’t want to get it fixed because every time I look in the mirror I go this is a life this is this is what happened to me.” He described it as “a reminder maybe to, to not fuck up again” and added, “maybe it tells kids that too.” These were conversational remarks in the interview, not a formal statement.

He also said he did not regard repair as essential then because he could breathe adequately. His reasoning was therefore a mix of personal significance, concern about recovery, and his assessment of how urgently he needed the procedure at that time.

Why he feared the recovery could be risky

Lange specifically worried about the pain following reconstructive surgery and the possibility that it could prompt him to take a pill. He said, “It’s just such a dangerous thing to get it fixed and then to be in that kind of intense pain and then have the temptation to take a pill.” That describes his personal concern; it does not establish that reconstruction necessarily requires opioid medication or causes relapse.

In the same interview, Lange recounted a history of damage that he attributed to drug use and physical trauma. He said he had snorted powder he believed contained glass and described a separate assault in which he was punched. Those details are his account of how the damage occurred, rather than independently verified medical history.

What doctors said about possible reconstruction

Separate reports from 2019 offer medical perspectives, but they are not the same as Lange’s personal reasons and do not establish what happened afterward.

Source and perspective What was reported What it does—and does not—establish
Dr. Paul Nassif, as reported by TMZ in September 2019 TMZ reported that Nassif described Lange’s condition as a saddle nose and wanted a period of sobriety before considering surgery. Nassif warned that renewed intranasal drug use after repair could damage the reconstruction. This was Nassif’s reported view at the time, not evidence that an operation was scheduled or that he made a present-day offer. Read the TMZ report.
Michael Armstrong Jr., M.D., in testimony dated September 24, 2019 In a Michigan Supreme Court case filing, Armstrong testified that Lange had undergone 12 rhinoplasties. He described concerns about whether another procedure could safely and reasonably meet the patient’s expectations. This is one physician’s testimony in a specific case, not a general conclusion about repeat rhinoplasty or Lange’s current surgical candidacy. Read the court filing.

TMZ quoted Nassif’s concern this way: “If you fix his nose, and then you start introducing drugs into the nose again, it will collapse, but this time, only worse.” The remark was Nassif’s warning, as reported by TMZ, about renewed drug use after reconstruction.

What is known about his decision now

The interview and reports cited here date to 2019. They explain Lange’s stated thinking at that time, but do not establish whether he later had surgery, changed his mind, or has a different breathing or medical situation now. A September 2019 BroBible report also covered his comments about the nose as a reminder; it does not resolve his current plans.
