If Netflix and Prime Video stop working together, start with the shared connection or streaming device—not two separate subscriptions. Test another app, test both services on another device, and then try the affected device on a phone hotspot. Those three checks usually show whether the fault is your Wi‑Fi, the device, one app, your account, or the service itself.
Run these three tests first
- Open another service. Try YouTube or another app you know normally works. If it also fails, investigate Wi‑Fi, the router, ISP, DNS, or a captive-portal login.
- Try another device on the same network. Use a phone, tablet, computer, or second TV. If Netflix and Prime Video work there, the original TV or streaming device is the likely problem.
- Try a different network. A phone hotspot is useful for diagnosis. If both services work over the hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi, focus on the router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or wireless interference.
| What you observe | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| YouTube and other apps also fail | Wi‑Fi, router, ISP, DNS, or a local outage |
| Both services fail on one TV but work on a phone | TV software, app data, storage, compatibility, or HDMI equipment |
| Both fail on every device at home | Shared network problem, account issue, or a wider service outage |
| Netflix fails but Prime Video works | Netflix app, account, title, device support, or Netflix service |
| Prime Video fails but Netflix works | Prime app, account, title rights, device support, or Prime service |
| Both work on a hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi | Router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or congestion |
| Both work in a browser but not the TV apps | TV app data, firmware, authentication, or device support |
Do not assume either service is currently down without checking its support pages and current status for your country. Netflix’s connection guidance is at Netflix Help; its alternate connection-error guidance is at Netflix connection troubleshooting.
Use the safe restart sequence
- Close Netflix or Prime Video completely.
- Restart the TV, streaming stick, console, phone, tablet, or computer. A TV in standby has not necessarily restarted; unplug it if its normal restart does not clear the fault.
- Unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait until it has internet service.
- Reconnect the separate router, if you have one, and wait for Wi‑Fi to return.
- Restart the streaming device again and retry.
Netflix’s documented device restart procedure is available at Netflix’s frozen or stuck-loading guide, and its network restart steps are at Netflix’s buffering guide. Record any exact error code before moving on.
When the connection is the problem
A browser can load a webpage while streaming still fails. Video needs a sustained, low-loss connection; Wi‑Fi interference, latency, packet loss, router congestion, weak signal, cellular limits, or an ISP routing fault can interrupt playback. A large speed-test number alone does not prove that streaming traffic is healthy.

- Run a test from the affected device when possible. Netflix recommends Fast.com for a direct connection test.
- Pause cloud backups, downloads, game updates, and other heavy traffic.
- Move the router closer, use the 5 GHz band when practical, or test Ethernet.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, custom DNS service, ad blocker, parental-control filter, or network-wide security appliance as a diagnostic—not as a permanent recommendation.
- On hotel, school, dormitory, café, workplace, satellite, or cellular networks, complete the browser sign-in page and check whether video services are blocked. Netflix discusses these restrictions at its public-network guidance.
If the problem remains, tell the ISP whether it affects one or several devices and whether each uses Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, as Netflix recommends at its ISP troubleshooting page.
Fix Netflix
Netflix will not open or says it cannot connect
- Confirm another app works.
- Restart Netflix and the device.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in.
- Install available Netflix and device-system updates.
- Reinstall Netflix if the platform permits it.
- Try Netflix in a browser or on a phone, then run Fast.com.
Netflix says these messages commonly reflect stale device data or a network path that cannot reach Netflix; see its connection guide.
Netflix is frozen or stuck loading
Force-close the app, restart the device and network, then sign out and back in. Test another profile, another title, and another device. If only one title fails, do not reset the router automatically. More detail is in Netflix’s frozen-screen instructions.
Netflix buffers or quality drops
Check Wi‑Fi strength and household traffic, compare Ethernet with Wi‑Fi, and test another network. Public, hotspot, satellite, and congested connections may be unsuitable even when they show as connected. Use Netflix’s buffering guidance rather than relying on one universal speed figure.

Netflix has sound but no picture
- Select the correct TV input.
- Reseat or replace the HDMI cable and try another HDMI port.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver or HDMI switch.
- Restart both the TV and device and test the built-in TV app.
- Test the same title on a phone or computer.

Netflix video is distorted, skipping, or stuttering
Restart the device, inspect the cable and display path, update the app, and test another device. If the fault follows only one television or external box, it is unlikely to be a Netflix-wide outage. See Netflix’s video-quality troubleshooting.
Netflix sign-in or profile trouble
Check the account email, try another profile, and sign out and back in. Reset the password only when login itself fails. If the account plays successfully in a browser or on a phone, the subscription is less likely to be the cause of a TV-only playback failure. Household and location rules can vary by country and plan.
Fix Prime Video
The app freezes, buffers, or will not play
- Close Prime Video completely.
- Restart the device and then the modem/router.
- Try another title and another device.
- Install Prime Video and device updates.
- Confirm automatic date, time, and time zone.
- Sign out and back in.
- Clear the app cache where the platform offers that control.
- Uninstall and reinstall Prime Video, then test another network.
Amazon’s connection and playback guidance is at this Prime Video support page and Prime Video’s device troubleshooting page.
Menus work but a title will not play
Try a different show or movie, a title included with membership rather than a rental, another profile, and another device or browser. A single failure can reflect regional rights, rental or purchase authorization, add-on-channel access, DRM compatibility, or a temporary content-delivery problem. “Video unavailable” does not by itself mean all of Prime Video is offline.
Prime Video black screen, missing audio, or HDMI failure
Check the TV input, reseat or replace HDMI, try another port, bypass a switch or receiver, and compare the built-in TV app with the external device. Test a lower-resolution or non-HDR title if only 4K/HDR playback fails. Do not factory-reset first: Prime Video warns that a reset removes account information and downloaded app content at its support instructions.

Date and time authentication errors
Enable automatic date, time, and time zone on the device, restart it, and reopen Prime Video. An incorrect clock can prevent authentication even when other apps appear online.
Live events
Live sports and streams can have stricter location, account, device, and bandwidth requirements than on-demand video. Check supported devices and connection conditions in Prime Video’s live-stream help.
Recommended Free Tools
Refresh software without destroying settings
Menu names differ among Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, iOS, and Android. Use your manufacturer’s equivalent controls rather than assuming one universal path.
- Update: install app and operating-system updates.
- Sign out/in: refreshes authentication but may require a password and two-factor verification.
- Clear cache: useful where exposed by the platform; it may not exist on every TV.
- Reinstall: removes damaged app data, but can delete downloads and require sign-in again.
- Factory reset: last resort only; it erases broader settings, installed apps, account data, and often downloads.
A built-in TV app failing does not prove the television is defective. Dedicated devices can be a workaround for an aging smart-TV platform, but they cannot repair an ISP outage, account authorization problem, or HDMI chain.

- When the problem began and what you already tried
Contact the ISP for multi-device network failures; Netflix or Amazon for service-specific account and playback errors; and the device manufacturer for firmware, HDMI, storage, or compatibility faults. Current service availability and device support change by country, model, plan, and app version, so verify those details in the applicable support hub: Netflix troubleshooting or Prime Video Help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould you buy a streaming device or Wi‑Fi upgrade?
Buy hardware only after the tests identify a hardware limitation. A Fire TV Stick 4K Max (Amazon), Roku player (Roku), Apple TV 4K (Apple), or Google TV Streamer (Google) may replace an unsupported or unreliable built-in TV platform. None fixes a service outage or home-network failure, and current prices vary by model and promotion.
Ethernet can provide a useful test and steadier link when the device is near the router; see Monoprice’s Ethernet range. Mesh Wi‑Fi is appropriate for distant rooms or dead zones, not for an app-specific account problem; examples include eero and Google Nest Wifi. Avoid generic “streaming repair” software and do not add a VPN or DNS service as a first-line fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Netflix and Prime Video fail at the same time?
Because they share the same Wi‑Fi, router, ISP, device software, or display chain. Test another app, another device, and a hotspot to separate those causes.
Why does Netflix work on my phone but not my TV?
The TV may have stale app data, outdated firmware, weak Wi‑Fi, unsupported software, or an HDMI/HDCP problem. Test the TV on a hotspot and compare its built-in app with a browser or external device.

Why does Prime Video show menus but not play videos?
The individual title may have rights, rental, purchase, live-event, DRM, or device-compatibility restrictions. Try another title and device before resetting anything.
Will a factory reset delete my subscriptions?
It removes device settings, account information, installed apps, and often downloads. Your subscription is held by the service account, but you will need to sign in again.
Could a VPN or DNS setting block streaming?
Yes. They can interfere with authentication, region detection, or delivery. Disable them temporarily only to test whether they are involved.
The Bottom Line
Classify the failure, test another app and device, compare home Wi‑Fi with a hotspot, then restart the device and network in order. Update or reinstall only after those tests, reserve factory reset for the final stage, and contact the party that matches the evidence.
