Anna Kendrick took the director’s chair on Woman of the Hour after joining the film as an actor and producer—not as part of a long-planned move into directing. In her account, a looming start date with no director prompted her to pitch herself. The prospect terrified her, but she wanted to shape a script she loved, and later called the experience “easily the most rewarding creative experience of my life.”
Why did Anna Kendrick decide to direct Woman of the Hour?
Kendrick had been attached to star in and produce the film for two years when production had a start date but no director. In an October 3, 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, she recalled that the team had little time to find someone. She considered pitching herself, then put together what she described as a “very haphazard” pitch.
Her reason, as she explained it, was a commitment to the whole film. She had spent time imagining how she would shape the script and was interested in more than playing Cheryl Bradshaw. Pitching herself was “absolutely terrifying,” she said; the process soon included interviewing department heads, a responsibility that left her more frightened than she could remember.
What made the directing job so intimidating?
Kendrick described confidence on set as something that came and went. At times, she said, she relied on instinct and adrenaline, drawing on what she had absorbed through years of working on film sets. Her nerves did not mean she lacked a point of view about the material; rather, she was afraid of failing to do justice to a story she cared about.

She also recalled a brief exchange with co-star Brittany Snow. As Kendrick recounted it, Snow told her: “You’ll get on set, and you’ll know what to do.” That is Kendrick’s recollection of Snow’s reassurance, not a separate account from Snow.
How did Kendrick approach the story’s themes?
Woman of the Hour dramatizes the real 1978 television appearance of serial killer Rodney Alcala on The Dating Game. Netflix’s Tudum overview describes Kendrick as playing Sheryl Bradshaw; Entertainment Weekly spells the contestant’s name Cheryl Bradshaw. The film’s scenes and character choices are a dramatization, not by themselves evidence of precisely what happened historically.
Kendrick said the game show served as a frame for a larger question: how people decide whether someone is safe. She did not see Alcala’s television appearance as the most interesting part of the story. She also wanted the film to confront subtle victim blaming and the limits of advice that puts the burden on potential victims to recognize danger.
In the EW interview, Kendrick described using natural landscapes—the desert, an isolated hilltop and the ocean—as settings that can feel restorative or safe, then become threatening. She also recalled that research became emotionally immediate when a newspaper report gave the address of a victim and she recognized the location near the ocean. That recognition is her account of her reaction to the material, not independent verification of details about the crime scene.

Entertainment Weekly framed the film’s approach as avoiding sensationalism while engaging with violence and the culture around it. That is the publication’s characterization; Kendrick’s own explanation centered on safety, victim blaming and the way the story’s settings can change in meaning.
A book connected to the film’s themes
Entertainment Weekly noted Kendrick had previously named Gavin de Becker’s The Gift of Fear as a favorite self-help book, linking its discussion of instincts and patterns of violence to themes in the film. It is a contextual reference, not a requirement for understanding the movie or a guarantee of safety outcomes.

Did Kendrick want to direct again?
Despite her fear at the outset, Kendrick said the experience was deeply fulfilling. Asked about directing again, she said, “I would love to.” She called making Woman of the Hour “easily the most rewarding creative experience of my life.” Those are her retrospective descriptions of the job, rather than a claim that directing was an easy transition.

The story is rooted in Alcala’s 1978 appearance on national television, but the available sources here do not provide a full chronology of his crimes. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported that Alcala died of natural causes on July 24, 2021; its notice is available at CDCR.
