Anna Kendrick called Woman of the Hour “the most revealing piece of work I’ve ever done,” saying the film “created a window into my mind.” She was describing the personal exposure she felt in making it—not calling the story a full autobiography. Her feature directorial debut draws on a real The Dating Game appearance by serial killer Rodney Alcala, while dramatizing and sometimes fictionalizing the experiences of contestant Sheryl Bradshaw, whom Kendrick plays.
What Kendrick meant by “most revealing”
In an interview with Adam White published by The Independent on October 19, 2024, Kendrick said the film left her feeling vulnerable and “a little frightened.” Her description of it as a window into her mind points to the personal material and perspective she brought to the project, rather than suggesting that the film recounts her life in full. The real event and the dramatized story
Netflix describes the film as the story of an aspiring actor in 1970s Los Angeles whose life intersects with Alcala’s on the television game show The Dating Game. Kendrick plays Bradshaw; Daniel Zovatto plays Alcala. Netflix says Alcala appeared on the show during his murder spree and was ultimately convicted of seven murders in two states. That is a concise historical frame, not a complete account of the crimes.
The film is based on a true story, but it is not a documentary reconstruction. Vogue notes that it dramatizes and occasionally fictionalizes Bradshaw’s experiences before, during, and after the show. Scenes should therefore be understood as part of a feature-film interpretation, not assumed to have happened exactly as depicted. Netflix’s film overview and interview with Kendrick and screenwriter Ian McDonald provide the premise and creative context; Kendrick’s interview with Vogue discusses the dramatization.

One scene drew directly on Kendrick’s experience
Kendrick told Vogue that the film’s audition scene—where a casting director asks about nudity and then comments on her body—came from an exchange she experienced at age 19. She said the conversation was verbatim. The personal detail was incorporated after she joined the project as director, giving a specific basis for her description of the film as revealing without making every part of the film autobiographical.

Kendrick told The Guardian that she wanted to portray the women with dignity and resisted a visual treatment she felt could make a victim’s scene titillating. She described an interest in how women communicate danger and discomfort, and in the social pressure to stay agreeable rather than risk being labelled difficult. In one example, she recalled discussing a shot with the cinematographer and realizing his proposal felt “very slick”; she did not want to photograph a victim that way. In Netflix’s interview, Kendrick also described an arc from shrinking oneself and pleasing others toward reclaiming power. She recognized that asserting oneself cannot guarantee safety—a tension that keeps the story from offering a simple lesson that the right response can always prevent harm.
