Andrew Garfield carried a life-size cardboard cutout of Florence Pugh onto the red carpet at the BFI London Film Festival screening of We Live in Time on October 17, 2024. Pugh was away filming East of Eden in New Zealand; Vanity Fair reported that she responded to Garfield’s gesture: “Lol. Genius. Well done Andrew!”
What happened at the London screening?
Garfield arrived at the October 17, 2024, BFI London Film Festival screening of We Live in Time with a life-size cardboard cutout of his co-star. He carried it and posed for red-carpet photographs. Vanity Fair reported that the image on the cutout appeared to show Pugh at an earlier New York screening. Vanity Fair’s account and PerthNow’s report the following day both describe Garfield with the cutout at the event; PerthNow says he later took it into the cinema.
Why was Florence Pugh absent?
According to Vanity Fair, Pugh was in New Zealand filming East of Eden, so she did not attend the London screening. Vanity Fair also reported that Pugh reposted its post about the cutout and replied: “Lol. Genius. Well done Andrew!”
What is We Live in Time about?
The film stars Pugh and Garfield and is directed by John Crowley. The Associated Press describes it as a non-linear story following a couple from their first meeting and falling in love through having a child and facing cancer. ITV’s October 17 video listing identifies Herne Hill and Surrey as settings in the film; those are story locations, not the location of the London Film Festival screening.
