A Los Angeles court granted Shiloh’s petition to change her legal name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie, according to contemporaneous reports. The Los Angeles Times reported that the petition was granted on August 19, 2024; the court order itself has not been independently reviewed here.
What name did Shiloh adopt?
Her reported legal name is Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. She petitioned to remove “Pitt” from her previous legal name, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt. The Los Angeles Times reported that it reviewed her petition; its August 20, 2024, account said the court granted it the day before. Los Angeles Times
When did she file, and when was the petition granted?
Shiloh filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on May 27, 2024—her 18th birthday. Contemporaneous reporting says the petition was granted on August 19. The August report described a postponement after a clerical error; the grant date was attributed to TMZ, rather than to an independently reviewed final court order. The Independent
Why did a legal notice appear in a newspaper?
The notice was a procedural step, not an advertisement Shiloh placed to announce her decision. Her attorney, Peter Levine, told the Los Angeles Times that the notice was published as part of the legal process. The July report described a hearing date of July 29 in the notice; the subsequent account reported that the matter was postponed and later granted.

Los Angeles Superior Court says a name-change petition is filed in the superior court of the county where the person lives. In cases where publication is required, notice must run in a legally qualified local newspaper once a week for at least four consecutive weeks before the hearing, and the newspaper must file proof of publication. Publication is not required in every case: the court lists exceptions, including certain gender-identity proceedings and specified address-confidentiality circumstances. Levine asked the press to be careful when discussing a young adult’s independent decision following “painful events,” but did not elaborate. No more specific reason was established in the contemporaneous coverage. Separate disputes involving her parents should not be treated as proof of why she chose to change her name. Los Angeles Times
