The instrument was a custom wearable prop, not a playable grand piano; its purpose was to make the outfit a visual counterpart to his seven-track solo-piano EP.
What André 3000 wore to the Met Gala
For the May 5, 2025 gala, André wore a workwear-inspired look created by Burberry and Benjamin Bixby in collaboration with stylist Law Roach. Its centerpiece was a piano-shaped backpack fabricated by Pink Sparrow. Vogue reported that the prop weighed 30 pounds and was built from foam, lauan plywood, and 3D-printed elements. It was modeled after a Steinway Model S baby grand, but it was a wearable prop—not a full, playable piano. Vogue’s red-carpet report details the design.
Why he wore a piano
The prop connected directly to the music André released that day. In an interview with GQ, he said he had imagined carrying a large piano on his back more than a decade earlier, while recording piano pieces, and had considered the image as a possible music-video idea. The gala appearance brought that long-running visual concept together with the release of 7 Piano Sketches. GQ’s interview describes the idea and its connection to the EP.
What is 7 Piano Sketches?
7 Piano Sketches is a seven-track solo-piano EP released as André was on his way to the museum. GQ describes the pieces as raw and improvisational, with voice-note introductions from André, a studio engineer, and choreographer Fatima Robinson. The FADER called it his first new project since 2023’s New Blue Sun, and described it as an instrumental piano collection. The FADER’s May 6, 2025 release report provides that context.

André told GQ that many of the pieces were small moments he had emailed to people close to him, including his son, Erykah Badu, his stepfather, Q-Tip, and Tyler, the Creator. He said some recipients might find them in their phone histories. GQ also reported that most of the tracks were roughly 12 to 15 years old and had been recorded on his iPhone.
The release and vinyl question
The gala appearance and EP release both took place on May 5, 2025; The FADER published its report the following day. GQ reported that André planned a vinyl edition of 7 Piano Sketches. That report establishes an intention, not whether the record was subsequently released or is currently available, so it is not enough on its own to confirm a purchase listing.

Fashion as personal expression
Discussing dandyism with GQ, André described it as an individual statement in fashion: “your own personal outburst in fashion or your own exclamation point on fashion.” The piano backpack made that idea unusually literal—a personal fashion gesture built around the music at the center of the evening.
