Olivia Cooke’s explanation is that Alicent recoils from Aegon’s grief because his vulnerability reflects a weakness she despises and tries to control in herself. She also wants him to become a capable ruler, so his distress lands as both a painful reminder of her own flaws and a disappointment in the leader she hoped to raise. That is Cooke’s interpretation of Alicent, not an objective diagnosis.

Why Alicent recoils from Aegon’s grief

In the season-two episode “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” Alicent sees Aegon sobbing alone amid the political fallout surrounding Otto Hightower’s dismissal. Cooke told Gizmodo/io9 that Aegon and Aemond reflect qualities Alicent hates in herself. “I think Aemond and Aegon specifically hold the mirror [up] to the elements of herself that she despises,” Cooke said.

That makes Aegon’s vulnerability difficult for Alicent to witness. Cooke put it plainly: “And I think his vulnerability in that moment, and his ineffectiveness, just repulses her.” Her reaction is not simply indifference to her son’s pain; in Cooke’s reading, his grief confronts Alicent with traits she has spent her life trying to suppress.

Her disappointment is bound up with her hopes for Aegon

Alicent wants Aegon to rule, but she had hoped he would be a stronger, more effective leader. Cooke explained, “She wants her son to rule and she wants to have bred a leader.” Seeing him overwhelmed makes that ambition collide with the son in front of her. The scene therefore holds two responses at once: a mother facing her child’s distress and a political operator confronting the weakness of the king she wanted him to become.

The scene comes as Alicent’s influence is slipping

Cooke described Alicent as beginning season two in a position of considerable influence: she is the king’s mother, and her father is Hand of the King. Alicent had enjoyed ruling in Viserys’s stead when he was ill and took pleasure in political maneuvering. But Cooke told ELLE that Alicent’s influence wanes as the season progresses and her sons treat her as irrelevant.

That shift offers a broader context for the scene, without replacing Cooke’s immediate explanation of her response to Aegon. Alicent is accustomed to control and cautious calculation, yet her sons are increasingly beyond her reach: Cooke said she is terrified of Aemond and cannot access Helaena. Her aversion to Aegon’s vulnerability sits within that precarious family position, where she wants to protect and direct her children but has less power to do either.

Rhaenyra remains an unresolved emotional presence

Alicent’s relationship with Rhaenyra forms another, separate strand of her state of mind. In a joint British Vogue interview, Cooke said Rhaenyra grows increasingly present in Alicent’s thoughts and that Alicent longs to reconnect. “She gets bigger and bigger and bigger in Alicent’s mind and she’s desperate to reconnect and have some sort of face time with Rhaenyra to commune and say sorry but also try and put a plaster over this huge chasm.” The desire for reconciliation coexists with the political rupture; it does not explain away Alicent’s reaction to Aegon, but it shows how much remains emotionally unresolved for her.

How Cooke approaches the character

Cooke has also discussed the gap between the source history and the series’ imagined interior lives. In the same Vogue conversation, she described Fire & Blood as a history told through men’s accounts and spoke about imagining the women’s humanity and what they might have felt. That is an account of Cooke’s approach to the adaptation, not evidence that the book itself gives her interpretation of Alicent’s thoughts.
