The quickest way to keep the central cast straight is to track the family around King Viserys: Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy portray Rhaenyra at different ages, Matt Smith plays her uncle Daemon, and Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans play Alicent and her father, Otto Hightower.
What is House of the Dragon about?
The series is a Game of Thrones prequel based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, telling the story of House Targaryen. The HBO Max Latin America Press Room describes it as set 200 years before Game of Thrones, while Warner Bros. Discovery’s property page says 300 years. Since the official pages conflict, the safest concise description is simply that it is a Targaryen prequel. HBO Max Latin America Press Room · Warner Bros. Discovery

Why are there two actors for Rhaenyra?
Rhaenyra’s story spans a major time shift, so Milly Alcock portrays her younger self and Emma D’Arcy portrays her later. The change is intentional, not a recast caused by a dispute or a change in the character’s identity. Season descriptions also reflect the passage of time through altered titles, family circumstances, and political position: the young princess and named heir is later described as a queen whose claim is challenged.

How do the Targaryen and Hightower relationships fit together?
Viserys’s family
Viserys is Rhaenyra’s father and Daemon’s older brother. That makes Daemon Rhaenyra’s uncle; by the Season 2 description, he is also her husband. These relationships help distinguish the Targaryen family’s personal bonds from the political contest over succession.
Alicent and Otto’s side of the succession dispute
Alicent is Otto’s daughter and Aegon II’s mother. In the Season 2 description, Rhaenyra’s younger half-brother has usurped her claim, while Otto supports Aegon II. The labels “queen” and “queen dowager” also belong to different political moments: Season 2 describes Rhaenyra as queen and Alicent as queen dowager, rather than using those titles as interchangeable character names.

Other names to recognize
Corlys Velaryon widens the guide beyond the immediate Targaryen-Hightower family. HBO Max lists Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys, “The Sea Snake.” Mysaria, played by Sonoya Mizuno, appears in the Season 1 description as Daemon’s ally.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Season 1 character copy describes young Rhaenyra with the line, “Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.” That is official character-description text, not a quotation attributed to Alcock or another cast member. The available official descriptions establish selected principal and supporting roles; they do not amount to a complete cast census for every episode. Warner Bros. Discovery Season 1
