Alice in Borderland Season 3 has six episodes, two fewer than Season 2, and its listed total runtime is 1 hour, 46 minutes, 43 seconds shorter. But its episodes are not shorter on average: the Season 3 episodes run about 65 minutes 53 seconds each, compared with 62 minutes 45 seconds for Season 2. Netflix’s published materials and the cited coverage do not explain why the third season has six episodes.
Why does Season 3 have only six episodes?
The reason has not been publicly established in the Netflix materials and coverage cited here. Netflix’s official listings give the release date, credits and story premise, but do not state why the season was ordered for six episodes. The episode count alone does not establish a budget, scheduling or creative explanation.

Netflix released Season 3 on September 25, 2025. Its official listing credits Haro Aso’s manga, published by Shogakukan, as the series’ source material, and names Shinsuke Sato as director and Yasuko Kuramitsu and Sato as screenwriters. Netflix Media Center and Netflix Tudum describe the season and its premise without giving a reason for its episode order.

#1 Best Overall
| Episode | Listed runtime |
|---|---|
| 1 | 61 minutes 47 seconds |
| 2 | 55 minutes 55 seconds |
| 3 | 62 minutes 8 seconds |
| 4 | 61 minutes 39 seconds |
| 5 | 77 minutes 19 seconds |
| 6 | 76 minutes 29 seconds |
Those listed episodes add up to 6 hours, 35 minutes and 17 seconds, averaging approximately 65 minutes and 53 seconds each. These are calculations from the BBFC’s episode runtimes, not a separately published industry statistic. The BBFC’s records apply to UK streaming classification entries; runtimes may differ in other territories or editions.
How does that compare with Season 2?
The BBFC lists eight Season 2 episodes, with runtimes of 47, 60, 65, 51, 67, 74, 59 and 79 minutes. The season totals 8 hours and 22 minutes, averaging 62 minutes and 45 seconds per episode. The comparison makes clear that Season 3 is shorter as a season, not as an average viewing commitment per episode.
| Measure | Season 2 | Season 3 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Episode count | 8 | 6 | Season 3 has 2 fewer |
| Total listed runtime | 8 hours 22 minutes | 6 hours 35 minutes 17 seconds | Season 3 is 1 hour 46 minutes 43 seconds shorter |
| Average listed episode runtime | 62 minutes 45 seconds | About 65 minutes 53 seconds | Season 3 averages about 3 minutes 8 seconds longer per episode |
All comparisons use BBFC UK streaming listings; totals and averages are arithmetic calculations from those figures.

Netflix Tudum says Arisu and Usagi returned to the real world after clearing the earlier games, married, and then Usagi was taken back to the Borderland, prompting Arisu to follow. Its ending explainer says Season 3 takes place five years after the main events of Season 2 and centers the new games on the Joker. Netflix’s Season 3 ending explainer provides that story context, but it does not connect the premise to the six-episode order.

Haro Aso’s manga is relevant source material for the series, but it is not a guide to Season 3’s new plot.
