Alien: Romulus is not reported to be shelved, but a sequel director and returning cast have not been confirmed in the sources reviewed. Fede Álvarez has said he would pass the directing role to another filmmaker, and a 2025 report that the script was finished does not establish that production is underway.
Is there going to be an Alien: Romulus sequel?
The latest reported development is a narrow sign that the project has not been shelved: on August 1, 2026, The Playlist reported that 20th Century Studios president of production Steve Asbell replied “Nope” to a claim that the sequel had been shelved. That response addresses the shelving rumor; it is not a detailed studio announcement confirming a production greenlight, filming schedule, director, cast, or release date. The Playlist’s report is the latest status cited here.

Is Fede Álvarez directing the sequel?
No. The published sequel reporting says Álvarez is stepping away from directing and intends to hand the role to a new filmmaker. GamesRadar+, reporting on an interview with TooFab, quoted him saying: “We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel for Romulus, but I’m gonna pass the torch on this one as director.” The quote describes the script’s status at the time of that 2025 interview, not proof that the same script is currently approved or that production has begun. GamesRadar+ reported the script and director handoff on September 5, 2025; TheWrap also reported that Álvarez would not direct.
Are the lead cast members returning?
No sequel casting commitments are confirmed in the sources cited here. The original film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, according to 20th Century Studios’ official film page. That page establishes the original cast, not the sequel cast. Earlier comments praising characters Rain and Andy likewise do not amount to confirmation that their actors will return.

What is known about the original film?
Alien: Romulus was released in the United States on August 16, 2024. The studio page lists Álvarez as an executive producer on the original film; it does not establish him as director of a sequel. Keeping the distinction clear matters: the original film’s credits and cast are documented, while sequel attachments remain unannounced in the reports cited above.
