Jac Schaeffer said Agatha All Along required less retrofitting of established Marvel film canon than WandaVision because Agatha had not appeared in Marvel’s feature films. That made the series comparatively independent—not separate from the MCU—and gave its creators more room to build a new story.
What Jac Schaeffer meant by “set apart”
Schaeffer, the creator and showrunner of Marvel’s Disney+ series Agatha All Along, described the difference as a lighter continuity workload. In excerpts from an interview with The Hollywood Reporter reproduced by Gizmodo on October 9, 2024, she said: “Agatha hasn’t appeared in any of the features [so we] didn’t have the burden of retrofitting any canon.”
She also called Agatha “her own bird,” explaining that the team did not have to do that work “in as big of a way” as it had on WandaVision. The distinction is about how much prior film history the writers had to accommodate, not whether the series belongs to Marvel continuity. Marvel’s official series page identifies it as a Disney+ series and lists September 18, 2024, as its release date.
Why WandaVision had more history to account for
WandaVision centered on Wanda Maximoff and Vision, characters who already had substantial individual and shared histories in Marvel films. Wanda’s Scarlet Witch storyline also carried context tied to the Infinity Stone. Schaeffer described the writing challenge as fitting the new series into that existing material while also supporting the stories that came before it.

By contrast, Agatha had not been a feature-film character. The Agatha All Along team therefore had less film continuity to retrofit around its central character. That did not erase Marvel canon; it meant the series could spend more of its creative effort establishing its own premise and mythology.
More room did not mean every creative choice was easy
Schaeffer’s comments were not a claim that fewer constraints automatically made the work simple. She said constraints can be creatively useful, but recalled that designing the Witches’ Road presented a different problem: some comic material was not usable or desirable for the show, leaving the team with such a broad creative space that it initially felt “almost too blue sky.”

That contrast helps clarify what “relieved” means here. The series was less burdened by the need to reconcile Agatha with a long record of feature-film appearances, but its creators still had to decide what to build with the freedom that left them.

Only relatively separate. Schaeffer’s remarks compare the show’s continuity demands with those of WandaVision; they do not describe an MCU break. Marvel presents Agatha All Along as its own Disney+ series, while the reported interview frames it as a pocket of the wider universe rather than an unrelated production.

The series has nine episodes, according to Gizmodo’s October 9, 2024 report. For viewers, the practical takeaway is that the show can be approached as a story focused on Agatha and the Witches’ Road, while its Marvel setting remains part of the larger MCU context.
