The DFB separately stopped delivery of 44 shirts ordered through its online shop and said it would develop an alternative design for the single digit 4. Neither organization said the design was intentional Nazi imagery; both rejected that interpretation.
How the controversy unfolded
-
Late March 2024: Germany’s new national-team shirt introduced a different font for player numbers. Observers on social media pointed out that two of its stylized fours placed together as “44” looked like the rune associated with the Nazi SS. Historian Michael König also raised the concern.

König called allowing the design on a jersey for the home European Championship “very questionable,” as reported by The Guardian. Speaking to Gizmodo, he said: “It was a shock for me to see the numbers like that. It reminded me directly of the SS runes.” He also said: “Germany’s worst period should not be printed on a jersey.”

The SS was a Nazi organization. The Washington Post described it as responsible for overseeing and administering Nazi crimes against humanity, including the genocide of six million Jews.
What Adidas and the DFB each did
The two organizations took different actions. Adidas blocked personalization across the Germany jersey; the DFB halted fulfillment of the specific 44 orders placed through its shop. The DFB’s proposed design change concerned the digit 4, not a separately assigned national-team number 44.
| Organization | Action | What it said about intent |
|---|---|---|
| Adidas | Disabled name-and-number personalization for the Germany jersey. | Spokesman Oliver Brüggen rejected suggestions that the resemblance was intentional. He said the company opposed “xenophobia, antisemitism, violence and hatred in every form,” and confirmed: “We will block personalisation of the jerseys.” |
| DFB | Stopped delivery of 44 shirts ordered through its online shop and said it would develop an alternative design for the number 4 and coordinate it with UEFA. | The DFB said that those involved in checking the numbers had not seen “any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the creation process of the jersey design.” It also said it took the comments seriously. |
The DFB’s statement, reported by The Washington Post, described a design response to public concern. It was not an admission that Nazi imagery had been intended or recognized during development. The association said its review had not identified the resemblance; that is the DFB’s account of its review, not an independently established finding.
Why the number 44 drew attention
The concern was about the appearance of two stylized fours side by side, not about a player wearing 44. The number was not assigned to a Germany national-team player, so the reported controversy centered on customization by fans. Observers said the paired digits recalled the SS rune; König described the association as immediate to him.

The distinction matters: Adidas’s personalization block prevented customers from adding names and numbers, while the DFB’s delivery stop applied to 44 orders in its own shop. The alternative the DFB proposed was a redesign of the number 4, which would address the visual form used in other numbers as well.

Neither Adidas nor the DFB admitted intentionally using Nazi imagery. Brüggen rejected the suggestion of intent on Adidas’s behalf. The DFB said its design reviewers had not seen a connection during development, while acknowledging the public comments and announcing a different 4 design. Those statements should be attributed to the organizations rather than treated as proof of what every reviewer noticed or intended.
The available reporting identifies König as a historian and documents his comments, but does not establish a detailed biography, institutional affiliation, or specialist field. It is therefore more accurate to describe him simply as a historian who publicly objected to the resemblance.
