Netflix’s four-part British crime drama pairs compelling performances with an immersive continuous-shot format. Is Adolescence a must-watch?

Adolescence is worth watching for its extraordinary performances and the way its continuous-shot format keeps viewers close to the people living through a murder case—not just the crime itself. The four-part British drama is emotionally demanding, and its long, unbroken takes can feel deliberately constraining. Here, that constraint mostly deepens the story rather than showing off.

What is Adolescence about?

Thirteen-year-old Jamie Miller, played by Owen Cooper, is arrested for the murder of a girl from his school. The four-part limited series follows the consequences for Jamie’s family and the people drawn into the case. It is a fictional drama, not a dramatization of one particular real murder or person. Netflix says co-creator and actor Stephen Graham’s idea was prompted by news reports he had heard about boys involved in knife crime.

Graham and Jack Thorne co-created and wrote the series; Philip Barantini directed it. Alongside Cooper and Graham, the principal cast includes Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty. The UK streaming release was 13 March 2025. The BBFC flags language, a discrimination theme and violence in each episode.

Does the one-shot technique work?

Each episode is presented as one continuous shot. That choice changes the viewing experience: there are no conventional cuts to provide a breather or redirect attention, and the camera’s movement makes the surrounding spaces and people part of the drama. It can create a strong sense of proximity, especially as the story moves between family life and institutions, while also making moments of waiting and transition feel exposed.

The method is not simply a technical stunt, though it is hard to ignore. The camera’s persistence can heighten tension and keep performances feeling immediate; it can also make the pacing feel unyielding. Whether that works for you depends partly on whether you welcome being held inside a scene rather than released from it by editing.

Netflix reports that the production used a DJI Ronin 4D camera, and Associated Press describes camera handoffs and movement through locations. Director Barantini told Netflix Tudum, “You just press record, and then press stop an hour later.” Graham told AP that the approach brings “that kind of spontaneity and that energy that you get from doing a play and doing a live performance,” while retaining television’s naturalistic style. The craft is impressive, but the format matters most when it intensifies the people and pressures on screen.

How strong are the performances and emotional impact?

Cooper’s performance gives Jamie a specificity that makes it difficult to reduce him to a symbol or a plot question. Graham helps anchor the family story, while Walters and Doherty contribute to the wider institutional fallout. The series gains force by attending to the way an accusation reverberates through relationships and encounters, rather than treating the arrest as the end of the story.

The emotional effect comes less from a single reveal than from staying with people as they try to respond to an event they cannot easily control. That closeness can be uncomfortable; the camera offers little distance, and the subject matter is heavy. The result is compelling drama, but not light viewing.

Does the series handle its themes well?

Adolescence connects violence and social influence to the lives of its characters rather than presenting them as detached talking points. Its focus on a boy, his family and the surrounding systems gives those themes human stakes. The series invites questions about how young people are shaped and what adults can see or miss, without making a fictional case stand in for every real one.

Netflix reported that the show had more than 141 million views in its first three months and reached number one in 80 countries within four weeks of release. Those are Netflix-reported figures, not independent measures of quality. The company also reported findings from Opinium Research fieldwork conducted 1–9 September 2025 among 2,000 UK parents, guardians and carers of 13–17-year-olds and their children. Among respondents familiar with the show, 56% of parents said it prompted conversations they had not previously had with their child, and 64% of teenagers said they felt more understood as a result. These are survey responses, not proof that watching the series caused either outcome. Netflix also reported that 11% of surveyed UK teens watched it at school; that figure does not establish educational effectiveness.

How many episodes are there, and how long is it?

The limited series has four episodes. The BBFC’s episode listings give these runtimes for the UK streaming release:

Episode Runtime
1 65 minutes, 6 seconds
2 51 minutes, 25 seconds
3 52 minutes, 59 seconds
4 60 minutes, 12 seconds

The Television Academy records eight Emmy wins for the series in 2025, including limited series, writing, directing, cinematography and acting. Netflix reports four Golden Globe wins in 2026.

Is Adolescence a must-watch?

For viewers open to a tense, emotionally difficult crime drama, yes. Its strongest case is the combination of credible performances and a formal idea that keeps the story immediate. The one-shot approach occasionally calls attention to itself, but it also reinforces the series’ sense of pressure and proximity. If you want a breezy mystery or an easy watch, this is not the right pick; if you want character-led drama that stays with its consequences, it earns the recommendation.
