The controversy most directly refers to the 2023 Netflix film You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, in which Adam Sandler’s daughters, Sunny and Sadie, played his onscreen daughters. Critics’ use of “nepo babies” focused on the advantage family connections can bring in a competitive industry—not on proof that the sisters were unqualified or that another actor lost a role.
Which film sparked the controversy?
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah stars Sunny Sandler as Stacy Friedman and Sadie Sandler as Ronnie Friedman, the daughters of Adam Sandler’s character, Danny. Jackie Sandler also appears. The film adapts Fiona Rosenbloom’s young adult novel. The Los Angeles Times reported on the casting and the ensuing debate.

Although the headline’s “new film” wording can become date-dependent, this is the daughters-plural casting story most closely associated with the controversy. A later Netflix film, Don’t Say Good Luck, stars Sunny alone; it is a separate project.
Why were Sunny and Sadie called “nepo babies”?
“Nepo baby” is a critical label for someone whose family connections may give them access to opportunities that others have to compete to obtain. The criticism in this case concerns how two of Adam Sandler’s daughters secured prominent roles in a film in which he also starred.

That question of access is distinct from whether the sisters performed well. The reporting establishes the family relationships and their casting; it does not establish that they lacked ability or that a particular performer was passed over because of them. Nor does it settle the wider question of how often family connections shape casting across the industry.
What did the director say about the casting?
Director Sammi Cohen told the Los Angeles Times that Sunny, then 14, and Sadie, then 17, were attached to star before Cohen joined the project. Cohen said the filmmakers built the rest of the cast and the film’s world around them.

Cohen defended the choice by describing it as part of Adam Sandler’s longstanding habit of making films with people close to him. As she put it: “What I say is, he’s still making movies with his friends, but they’re his kids.” Cohen also praised the sisters’ interest in filmmaking and said, “They love acting and filmmaking in general. They take such an interest in how the movie is made, and they’re both so talented.” Those are the director’s defense and assessment; they do not show that family ties played no part in the decision.
How did audiences and critics respond?
A 2023 Independent analysis described nepotism complaints about the film as relatively muted and suggested that its favorable critical reception and Sunny’s lead performance helped explain the response. That is the outlet’s interpretation, not a measurement of what all viewers thought. The debate is best understood as a question about unequal access, rather than as a verdict on the film’s reception or the sisters’ talent.
Does the controversy refer to Sunny Sandler’s later film?
It may, depending on when a reader encountered the headline. In August 2026, the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press reviewed Don’t Say Good Luck, a Sunny Sandler-led film produced by Adam and Jackie Sandler. The Los Angeles Times review addressed nepo-baby discourse while describing the story as an ode to parental support; the AP identified Sunny as Adam’s 17-year-old daughter.
That later project keeps the conversation current, but it is not the same casting case: Don’t Say Good Luck stars Sunny, not both daughters. The 2023 film is the clearer match for a controversy framed around Adam Sandler’s daughters in the plural.
