Adam Sandler wore gym shorts and a blue hoodie to the 2025 Oscars as part of a planned comedy bit. Conan O’Brien later said Sandler suggested dressing in the clothes he felt most comfortable wearing; O’Brien used the outfit to set up a mock confrontation during his opening monologue.
What happened at the 2025 Oscars?
At the 97th Academy Awards, Sandler appeared in a blue hoodie and gym shorts. During the opening monologue, host Conan O’Brien asked him what he was wearing. Sandler played along, saying that nobody had paid attention to his clothes until O’Brien brought them up. He then delivered a mock-offended response and announced he was leaving.
The gag continued with a joking invitation to play five-on-five basketball and a hug for Timothée Chalamet as Sandler headed out. The Independent reported the exchange contemporaneously, but the available reporting does not establish an official transcript or primary video citation.
Why did Adam Sandler wear shorts?
O’Brien said after the ceremony that he and Sandler were old friends and that he had called Sandler with an initial idea for involving him in the show. Sandler liked the idea, then proposed dressing in the way he felt most comfortable. O’Brien credited the clothing choice to Sandler.

In the account reported by Rolling Stone and syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, O’Brien said: “Adam and I are old friends,” and added, “And then he said, ‘I have another idea.’ And it involved him dressing in the way that he’s most comfortable — which, of course, was his idea, because he doesn’t want to put on a tux.” The exchange is best understood as a comedy premise, not a real dispute over an Oscars dress code.

- O’Brien: “Adam, what are you wearing?”
- Sandler: “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up.”
- O’Brien: “You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2AM, Adam.”
- Sandler: “You know what, I like the way I look, because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear or what I don’t wear. If my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers, I’m going.”
Was the walkout real?
The walkout was part of the staged exchange. Sandler’s mock offense and departure followed O’Brien’s joke about his outfit; the later account from O’Brien explains that Sandler himself had suggested the comfortable-clothes idea. The available reports support the comedy-bit explanation, but do not establish additional backstage details.
Was this the 2020 Oscars?
No. The shorts appearance was at the 2025 ceremony, the 97th Academy Awards. The Academy’s announcement about the 92nd Oscars dates that separate ceremony to February 9, 2020; it is unrelated to Sandler’s 2025 appearance.
