Why a Lindsay Lohan Joke Was Cut From the Digital Release of Mean Girls (2024)

The digital version of Mean Girls (2024) reportedly shortened Megan Thee Stallion’s cameo and removed a reference that Lindsay Lohan’s representative said hurt her. The studio’s reason for the change was not confirmed in the cited reports.

Reports comparing the theatrical and digital versions of Mean Girls (2024) said the digital cut shortened Megan Thee Stallion’s cameo and removed its “fire crotch” reference. The change followed a statement from Lindsay Lohan’s representative that she was “very hurt and disappointed” by the reference. No Paramount statement in the cited coverage confirms why the edit was made or that Lohan asked for it.

What changed in the digital version?

In the theatrical version, Megan Thee Stallion appears briefly and delivers a line containing the phrase “fire crotch.” Contemporary reports said the digital version shortened the cameo and removed those words. E! News reported that the digital release became available on February 20, 2024; USA Today, in a report syndicated by Yahoo, said it compared a digital copy purchased on Amazon with the theatrical version. E! News and USA Today/Yahoo described the change. The cited accounts are news reports of a version comparison, not a studio confirmation of the edit.

Why did the phrase draw attention?

“Fire crotch” echoed an insult directed at Lohan in 2006. After the 2024 film’s theatrical release, her representative told outlets that “Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film.” That wording came from her representative, not a direct statement by Lohan. E! News reported the statement alongside coverage of the edit.

The timing linked Lohan’s reaction with the digital change in contemporary coverage, but the available reporting does not establish that she requested the edit or that her reaction was the confirmed reason for it. The distinction matters: the reported change is one fact; the motive behind it remains unconfirmed by a studio statement in the cited accounts.

How the 2024 film connects to the original

The 2024 Mean Girls is a musical adaptation shaped by the Broadway musical and the 2004 film, not simply a shot-for-shot remake. Tina Fey wrote the screenplay, and Lohan—star of the 2004 film—appeared at the 2024 film’s premiere. The Associated Press described the new film as a “new twist” incorporating songs and new technology. The Associated Press’s coverage also quoted Fey discussing the story’s themes of people using new ways to put others down; that broader comment was not an explanation of the edit.

Where and when the film was announced for streaming

Streaming availability depends on date and territory. Paramount announced that Mean Girls (2024) would begin streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on March 5, 2024. In August 2026, Paramount announced a free-streaming premiere on Pluto TV for September 1, 2026, alongside the 2004 film. Those announcements establish the platforms and dates announced, not current availability in every region. Check the service’s listing for your location before watching.
