What happened with Alex Wennberg and BookTok?
Hockey-romance readers on TikTok were posting about NHL players, including then-Kraken forward Alex Wennberg. Some edits paired romance-book quotations with footage of real players. The Kraken initially joined the conversation with BookTok-oriented videos and captions, according to contemporaneous coverage by The Washington Post and Know Your Meme.
In late July, Felicia Wennberg objected to comments and videos she said had crossed a line. Alex then spoke out, objecting to sexual harassment and comments about his wife and their child, as reported by The Washington Post. “Harassment” here describes the Wennbergs’ characterization of the conduct; the cited reports do not establish a legal finding.
The Kraken removed or archived its BookTok-related social videos after the statements. The controversy was therefore not simply a clash between readers and a player: the team had also chosen to market toward the audience, while the Wennbergs drew a boundary around attention they regarded as personal and inappropriate.

What did the Wennbergs say?
Felicia Wennberg’s objection
Know Your Meme reproduced an Instagram Story in which Felicia Wennberg wrote that she objected when readers’ desires came with “sexual harassment” and inappropriate comments. She also asked people to think twice about comments, videos, or chanting “krak my back” at real people. The archived reproduction spells one reference to the community as “booktook”; because the original Story is not available in the cited account, its spelling and punctuation should not be treated as independently confirmed.
Her message distinguished criticism of specific behavior from hostility toward the entire community: the reproduced post said she meant “no hate on the booktook community.”
Alex Wennberg’s response
The Washington Post quoted Alex Wennberg as saying, “Enough of sexual harassment, and harassment of our character and our relationship.” Its report says his objection included comments on Felicia’s Instagram and photos of their child. The statements express the couple’s account and boundaries; they should not be recast as a finding about every person who participated in BookTok or discussed the player.
Why did the Seattle Kraken delete its BookTok videos?
The team’s promotional posts had brought the Kraken into the same online conversation as fans’ romance-themed edits. After the Wennbergs objected, the team took down or archived the related videos, according to the contemporaneous reporting. The available accounts establish the timing and removal, but do not provide a detailed official explanation of the team’s decision.

Know Your Meme reports that creator Kierra Lewis said the team had encouraged her through tickets and a jersey. That is Lewis’s reported account of her interactions with the Kraken, not independent proof that the team approved every fan post or comment. The team’s decision to engage with a genre audience and the conduct of individual fans are distinct questions.
How did BookTok users react?
Some users criticized the Kraken and the Wennbergs’ response, while other discussion focused on the difference between enjoying romance fiction and directing sexualized attention at real athletes. The reports document divided reactions, not a consensus across BookTok. They also do not provide a reliable, independently verified measure of how many users engaged in the behavior at issue or supported either side.

Know Your Meme relays an author’s social-media claim that aggressive or predatory fans made up 1% of the fandom and the remaining 99% did not. That figure is an attributed assertion, not a measured prevalence estimate, so it cannot establish how common the conduct was.

BookTok is a TikTok community where readers share book recommendations, including romance. Hockey romance sits within sports romance: the high stakes, team dynamics, and pressure of competition can supply dramatic material for fictional relationships. Laynie-Rose Rizer, events manager at East City Bookshop, told The Washington Post that the sport’s tension and risk can elevate a romance story.

That genre context does not make a real player equivalent to a fictional character. A romance trope or book quotation does not describe Alex Wennberg’s private life, and interest in hockey romance is not itself evidence of harassment. The line at issue in this episode was the move from fiction and fan discussion to comments or behavior the Wennbergs said had become personal and sexualized.
The Washington Post reported on August 6, 2023, that all 10 top sports romances on Amazon at that time involved hockey. That was a dated snapshot in the newspaper’s article, not a current ranking.
Where is Alex Wennberg now?
Wennberg is no longer a Seattle Kraken player. Seattle announced on March 6, 2024, that it had traded him to the New York Rangers for a 2024 second-round pick and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick: the Kraken’s trade announcement.
