At dawn on March 8, 2024, 105 women gathered naked on St George’s Terrace in Perth for a photograph intended to show solidarity with women affected by gendered violence. Photographer Lauren Crooke organized the International Women’s Day event, which used purple paint to let participants mark personal experiences of violence, according to PerthNow’s report.
Why did the women pose naked?
The shoot was framed as a stand with women who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, or other forms of gendered violence. Crooke described its message as being about “consent and choice and power,” rather than nudity itself, in comments to Mix94.5’s Pete & Kymba, as quoted by PerthNow.
Addressing the possibility that viewers might sexualize the image, Crooke said: “People who may sexualise it is exactly the problem, people can’t think about naked women without relating to porn”. The event’s stated purpose was to challenge that response and make women’s experiences visible.
How did the purple paint work?
Before the photograph, Crooke offered participants purple paint to put on their chests if they had experienced gender-based violence or sexual assault. PerthNow said the examples included grooming, cat-calling, and groping, and reported that only five women were left unpainted.

That figure is PerthNow’s account of the activity, not the result of a documented survey. The report does not explain how the count was collected, so it should not be treated as a measured estimate of how many participants—or women more broadly—had experienced violence.
Who organized the shoot, and how large was it?
Photographer Lauren Crooke organized the dawn gathering on St George’s Terrace in Perth’s central business district. PerthNow reported 105 participants in 2024 and described the event as part of a wider movement, with other nude photo shoots that Friday in the UK, the United States, New Zealand, and elsewhere. Its report does not identify a central organization coordinating those events.

What did participants say people could do to show support?
Participant Rosie Rees described the initiative as a stand for women who had experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, or other gendered violence. She also emphasized that posing nude was not necessary to support the cause. In a statement PerthNow said she wrote on Instagram, Rees suggested talking openly about personal experiences, supporting women who might be suffering in silence, or donating to a women’s shelter.
