“Thunderbolts” is not one fixed team. Marvel’s own official overview treats it as a name reused by several rosters, each with its own leaders and mission, and the only reliable way to answer “who is on the Thunderbolts?” is to name the series or year first. The lineups Marvel highlights are the 1997 original, a 2012 team led by Red Hulk, a 2022 New York City response team headed by Clint Barton, and a 2023 black-ops unit organized by Bucky Barnes.
Why one name covers several teams
The Thunderbolts debuted in a Marvel world without many of its usual heroes, and the team’s defining hook was that its members were villains posing as heroes. Later iterations kept the name but changed almost everything else: who is on the roster, who leads it, and what it is for. A reader who sees a Thunderbolts cover and a character’s name should therefore check which series the character belongs to before assuming anything about the rest of the team.
Lineups at a glance
The table below uses only the rosters and descriptions Marvel gives in its official overview. Where that overview does not name a member or leader, the cell says so rather than filling the gap from memory.
| Iteration (Marvel’s label) | Roster named by Marvel | Leader or organizer | Mission and operating style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thunderbolts (1997) #1 | Not stated; the summary describes a secretive new super-team without listing members | Not stated | Villains posing as heroes, introduced while major heroes were absent |
| Thunderbolts (2012) #1 | Red Hulk, Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, the Punisher | Not stated | Hard-edged targeting of dangerous adversaries outside conventional courts and jails |
| Thunderbolts (2022) #1 | Hawkeye, Spectrum, America Chavez, Power Man, Persuasion, Gutsen Glory | Clint Barton (Hawkeye), tasked with heading the team | New York City response team handling local superpowered crises |
| Thunderbolts (2023) #1 | Operative roster not stated in the overview; the page names Bucky Barnes and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine as the pairing behind it | Bucky Barnes, with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine | Covert black-ops action against powerful targets, named as the Red Skull, the Kingpin, and Doctor Doom |
Members by iteration
Thunderbolts (1997): villains in heroes’ clothing
The original team is defined more by its premise than by a named cast. Marvel’s summary frames it as a secretive super-team that appeared when the heroes were gone, and its hook was deception: the members presented themselves as heroes while being villains. Because the overview does not enumerate its members, this entry cannot be used to list who the original Thunderbolts were; readers wanting that roster will need the issues themselves.

Thunderbolts (2012): Red Hulk’s hard-edged team
The 2012 lineup is the one most readers will recognize from the five names Marvel highlights: Red Hulk, Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, and the Punisher. Red Hulk is Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Marvel says Ross became the Red Hulk to overcome his greatest enemy and later became a reluctant hero who worked with the Avengers and the Thunderbolts. The overview does not name a single leader for this roster, so do not assume Ross was in charge simply because he is the best-known name on it.
Thunderbolts (2022): Clint Barton’s response team
Marvel’s 2022 entry is built around Clint Barton, who is tasked with heading the team. Its named members are Spectrum, America Chavez, Power Man, Persuasion, and Gutsen Glory alongside him. The mission is local rather than global: a New York City team responding to superpowered crises. This is the most different of the highlighted rosters from the 2012 lineup, with no overlap in named members.

Thunderbolts (2023): Bucky Barnes and covert action
The 2023 team is presented as a covert operation. Marvel says Bucky Barnes assembles black-ops heavy hitters with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and the targets named are the Red Skull, the Kingpin, and Doctor Doom. Valentina is described as a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who used her espionage skills for her own ends, which makes a simple hero-or-villain label hard to apply to her. The overview does not give the full operative roster, so any list of 2023 members beyond the pairing is not established by Marvel’s description.
Other series Marvel lists
Marvel’s overview also covers stories outside the four entries above, including the 2004 New Thunderbolts, a 2006 series, and King in Black: Thunderbolts (2021), along with later stories. These are not summarized with rosters in the same source, so they are best read as separate iterations to be checked against their own issues rather than folded into the lists above.

Adjacent characters who are not on these rosters
Bob Reynolds, better known as the Sentry, is often discussed alongside Thunderbolts characters. Marvel describes him as transformed into the Sentry after drinking a serum, with the Void as a dangerous dark alter ego. The official Thunderbolts overview does not list him as a member of any of its highlighted rosters, so he should not be counted as a Thunderbolt on that basis.
