The woman in Daemon Targaryen’s dream in House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5 is his mother, Alyssa Targaryen—not Alys Rivers. The reveal comes after Daemon imagines a woman praising him as “the strong one” and “the finest swordsman,” then identifies her as “My favorite son.” TIME reports the scene and its reveal.
Who is Daemon’s mother in the dream?
She is Alyssa Targaryen, Daemon’s mother. In the Episode 5 sequence, Daemon first fantasizes about a woman admiring him; the scene then reveals that she is Alyssa. TIME reports her imagined praise as “the strong one,” “the finest swordsman,” and “the fearless dragonrider,” ending with “My favorite son.” These are words spoken within Daemon’s dream, not a present-day conversation. TIME’s account of the dream also discusses Alyssa’s background in George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
Is the woman Alys Rivers?
No. Alys Rivers and Alyssa Targaryen are different characters. Alys is the healer Daemon encounters at Harrenhal; Alyssa is his mother, revealed in the Episode 5 dream. The similar names can make the sequence easy to misread, but the scene’s reveal identifies the dream woman as Alyssa. TIME’s Episode 5 coverage distinguishes the mother reveal from the Harrenhal material.
How does the dream differ from Daemon’s earlier visions?
The mother dream occurs in Season 2, Episode 5. The preceding Episode 4 includes separate Harrenhal visions, among them an encounter with young Rhaenyra and a hallucination involving Laena. Those scenes are not alternate identities for the woman in Episode 5. TVLine’s Episode 4 recap covers the earlier visions.

What causes Daemon’s visions?
The cited coverage does not establish a definitive cause. TIME raises the curse associated with Harrenhal, Alys Rivers’s powers, or a combination of the two as possibilities—not confirmed plot mechanics. TIME’s Harrenhal explainer discusses the castle’s supernatural reputation and Alys’s role.
Alys actor Gayle Rankin offers her own interpretation rather than an official explanation: she says, “I think she is actually a healer,” and describes Alys as prophetic while saying the nature and limits of her powers remain mysterious. Rankin’s interview with ELLE records that view.
