Deshpande—also known as PuLa—was Purushottam Laxman Deshpande (8 November 1919–12 June 2000), a Marathi writer and humorist from Maharashtra. He worked across literature, theatre, cinema and music, making him a many-sided cultural figure as well as the subject of the Marathi biopic Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli.
Who was P. L. Deshpande?
Deshpande was born in Mumbai on 8 November 1919. The initials P. L. and the affectionate name PuLa both refer to him. He became known for Marathi writing and humor, but his career extended well beyond the page.

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) describes him as a writer, director, playwright, screenplay writer, actor, composer and harmonium player. The Government of India’s National Film Archive of India also highlighted his work in cinema as a writer, actor, director and composer. These roles help explain why accounts of his life present him as a broad cultural figure, not simply a humorist.

His writing ranged across humor, satire, caricature, character sketches, essays, travelogues and drama. Google Arts & Culture says he published more than 60 books; its page does not date that count, so it is best understood as the source’s estimate rather than a current audited total.

Vyakti ani Valli
One of his best-known works is Vyakti ani Valli, a collection of character sketches. Google Arts & Culture says the book received the Sahitya Akademi award. Other works named by the source include the travelogue Apurvai, Batatyachi Chawl and the play Tee Phoolrani.
What is Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli about?
Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli is a Marathi biographical film based on Deshpande’s life. Netflix lists the first installment as Bhai: Vyakti Ki Valli – Poorvardha and describes it as the first part of a two-part biopic focused on his early years. Apple TV lists the title as Bhai – Vyakti Ki Valli, names Mahesh Manjrekar as director and includes Sagar Deshmukh among the cast. These are catalog descriptions and credits, rather than a guarantee that every dramatized scene is established biography.

The NCPA describes it as presenting Deshpande’s life in his own words, with the broader focus on his multifaceted life. It is a documentary, unlike the later dramatic biopic, whose first installment is described as focusing on his early years.
