In November 2023, on her 68th birthday, Whoopi Goldberg dedicated a tribute segment on The View to her brother, Clyde K. Johnson, who died on May 11, 2015, of a brain aneurysm. Reports disagree on his age at death, listing him as either 65 or 66. Goldberg herself is now 70, so the “turns 68” framing describes 2023, not today.
What Goldberg said on the birthday tribute
The tribute ran on the November 2023 episode of The View, timed to Goldberg’s birthday. Secondary coverage reports that she said she had now lived past the age at which her brother died, and that she wanted to celebrate for people who never got that chance. That account comes from news write-ups, not from a checked broadcast transcript, so treat it as a close paraphrase rather than her exact words.
The headline coverage carried a single line in quotation marks: “For All Those Folks Who Didn’t Get to Get Here,” as published by Yahoo Entertainment. That phrasing belongs to the headline; it has not been confirmed as a verbatim quote from the broadcast.
Who Clyde Johnson was
Clyde K. Johnson was Goldberg’s brother. The established facts about him are few:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Death: May 11, 2015, from a brain aneurysm, according to The List. BET’s coverage described him as having died suddenly of a brain aneurysm.
- Birth year: Wikipedia gives an approximate year of c. 1949. No exact birth date has been confirmed, and a date given by one low-quality website should not be relied on.
- Family details: Descriptions such as “only sibling” or “older brother” appear in secondary summaries but are not tied to a checked primary source, so they are not stated here.
How old he was when he died
Outlets do not agree on his age at death. The table shows what each source reports.
| Source | Reported age at death | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yahoo Entertainment (2023 tribute headline) | 65 | Year of the headline stated in tribute coverage from November 2023 |
| Outlook India (headline) | 65 | Headline-level report; article body not checked |
| The List (2015 death reporting) | 66 | Reported at the time of his death |
Because his birth date is not confirmed, neither figure can be checked against a date of birth. The safest wording is “reported to be 65 or 66 at death.”

Why the headline’s age is out of date
Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955, in New York City. She turned 68 in November 2023, which is the moment the tribute headline describes. She turned 70 in November 2025, and she turns 71 on November 13, 2026. Any article that says she “turns 68” is describing the past.
Her memoir and later remembrances
Goldberg has continued to write about her brother. Her memoir Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me honors him, and Distractify described it as a book in which she remembers and honors her deceased brother. Secondary search summaries date the book to 2024; that year is reported by secondary sources rather than confirmed from the publisher’s listing. A People report, cited only through a secondary summary, mentioned an Instagram post on October 17 marking what would have been Clyde’s 74th birthday. The year of that post could not be confirmed.
