Whoopi Goldberg answered Donald Trump’s criticism of her comedy on ABC’s The View on October 10, 2024, a day after Trump described her past performance as “filthy, dirty, disgusting” at a Pennsylvania campaign rally. Her reply was that he knew her style and had hired her four times, a count she attributed to herself and that the reporting did not independently confirm.

How the exchange unfolded

The sequence ran over three days in October 2024, during the final stretch of that year’s presidential campaign. The table below sets out each step and where the account comes from.

Date (2024) What happened Source as reported
October 8 The View interviewed then-Vice President Kamala Harris. TVLine identifies this interview as the context Trump later criticized at rallies. TVLine
October 9 Trump spoke at a Pennsylvania rally and criticized Goldberg, referring to a past comedy engagement. AP reports that he also criticized co-host Sunny Hostin at a separate point in his Pennsylvania campaigning. Associated Press; TVLine
October 10 Goldberg and her co-hosts responded on The View. The hosts walked onto the set to Christina Aguilera’s song “Dirty,” which Goldberg said echoed Trump’s description. Associated Press

What Trump said

According to the Associated Press, Trump told the rally crowd: “She was so filthy, dirty, disgusting, half the place left. I said I’d never hire her again.” The AP account treats the claim that half the audience walked out as Trump’s own assertion. No report the AP account relies on independently verifies it, so readers should treat it as a claim made at a rally rather than a documented fact.

What Goldberg said on The View

Goldberg did not dispute the word “filthy.” The AP quotes her as saying: “I was filthy and stand on that fact. I have always been filthy. And you knew that when you hired me.”

She also said Trump had hired her four times and asked, “How dumb are you?” The four-engagement count is Goldberg’s statement. Neither the AP nor TVLine reporting independently establishes how many times she was hired.

Her response also drew a distinction between kinds of offense. AP reports that she referenced the Access Hollywood recording while saying: “There’s a difference between people who assault other people and people who say words that you don’t want little kids saying in the middle of church.” That comparison was Goldberg’s framing; it is not a finding about Trump’s conduct.

Sunny Hostin’s separate response

Co-host Sunny Hostin answered Trump separately. AP describes her as a lawyer and ABC News senior legal correspondent, and her remarks took a legal-themed approach rather than repeating Goldberg’s argument. Her comments are distinct from Goldberg’s and should be read on their own.

What the reporting does and does not establish

  • Established by the reporting: the dates of the rally and the broadcast, the wording of each side’s remarks as quoted by AP, and the hosts’ use of Aguilera’s “Dirty” as their walk-on music.
  • Attributed, not verified: the number of times Trump hired Goldberg, and the claim that half the audience left during her performance.
  • Context, not outcome: the October 8 Harris interview is the program Trump was responding to in his rally remarks, according to TVLine. The reporting does not describe any further consequence for either side.

Searchers looking for the exchange will find the same quoted language across reports: “filthy, dirty, disgusting,” “You hired me four times,” and the line about “little kids” in church. Those phrases are reported as spoken on the dates above.
