Former costars Wendy Makkena and Sheryl Lee Ralph embraced her as she bent over in tears, and Kathy Najimy followed with a hug. The episode was framed as a celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary.
What happened on the June 2024 episode
The special was an hour-long The View segment built around the 1993 sequel. Goldberg appeared with Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, along with music supervisor Marc Shaiman and composer Mervyn Warren. The group looked back on making the film, and Goldberg led a choir in “Oh Happy Day” during the hour. TV Insider covered the anniversary framing and the participant list.
The emotional peak came at the end. Returning actors who had played the students joined the adult cast and a new choir of children for “Joyful, Joyful,” the hymn tied to the film’s climax. Goldberg performed in her nun’s habit and led the number. Entertainment Tonight reported that she bent over, crying into her hands, while Makkena and Ralph embraced her and Najimy hugged her next.

What the cast said on air
Introducing the returning group, Goldberg told viewers, as quoted by The View: “I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since this heaven-sent bunch made lightning strike twice in the sequel I was blessed to be part of, Sister Act 2.”
TV Insider quoted Goldberg on why the film still lands with audiences: “I think everybody recognizes themselves. I think worldwide, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you are the age of those kids when you see the movie.” She added that viewers remember wanting to skip Catholic school and later wishing they had gone, with teachers like the ones in the film.

Najimy, also quoted by TV Insider, praised the young performers: “I thought the kids were miraculous, I felt like they were right in our veins right away. We were all like one huge family.”
Dates and what the coverage does not establish
- Broadcast date: June 5, 2024. The episode and the reports about it were published that day.
- Anniversary label: Coverage calls the event a 30th-anniversary reunion. The film was released in 1993, so the 30-year mark itself fell in 2023; the reunion aired a year later.
- Performance figures: No ratings, audience size, or other viewing statistics appear in the event coverage reviewed.
- Current availability: The coverage does not establish whether the full episode or the “Joyful, Joyful” clip is currently streaming, in what region, or on which platform. Check the official The View channels before relying on a link.
Reading the moment in context
The reunion is best understood as a sequel-anniversary tribute rather than a new production. The original 1993 film is the source of the song and the students; the 2024 episode is a television broadcast of a live reunion, and the emotional response is the reason it circulated. Viewers looking for the film itself should treat the reunion clip and the movie as separate items, since they differ in date, format, and cast context.
