On April 30, 2024, he removed a swarm from the protective netting behind home plate at Chase Field before the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks then invited him to throw the ceremonial first pitch in his beekeeper suit.
Why was the Dodgers–Diamondbacks game delayed?
Bees began gathering on the protective netting behind home plate shortly before the scheduled first pitch. The Chase Field roof was open. With fans seated near the swarm, stadium staff cleared the sections behind home plate while Diamondbacks vice president of baseball operations Mike Rock consulted Major League Baseball about whether to wait or postpone the game.
According to the Associated Press report republished by KSL, the game’s overall delay was nearly two hours. Those timings were reported approximately, not as an independently audited game-clock measurement.
Who removed the bees at Chase Field?
Matt Hilton, identified in the Associated Press report as Blue Sky Pest Control’s Phoenix branch manager, was called while he was at his son’s final T-ball game. He gathered his equipment and drove from Surprise to the stadium. About 70 minutes after the scheduled first pitch, he arrived, rode in from right field on a cart, and used a scissor lift to reach the swarm.

The AP account says Hilton used spray and a shop vacuum during the removal. That describes the tools used in this particular incident, not general advice for handling bees.
How long was the game delayed, and did it go ahead?
The removal took place amid a delay reported as nearly 90 minutes, followed by an additional 30-minute wait to make sure the bees were gone and allow players to loosen up again. The game proceeded after the removal and wait. The Diamondbacks also changed their starting pitcher, replacing Jordan Montgomery with Brandon Hughes.

Did the beekeeper throw out the first pitch?
Yes. The Diamondbacks invited Hilton to throw the ceremonial first pitch, and he wore his beekeeper suit for the toss. Fans cheered as he arrived and worked on the swarm. Hilton described the jump from routine work to a major-league moment to the Associated Press, in the report republished by KSL: “Minor leagues to the big leagues now.” He also said, “It’s pretty cool.”
