Lou Pearlman was an American music and aviation entrepreneur best known for forming the Backstreet Boys and helping develop NSYNC. His success in music gave credibility to a web of businesses and investment offers. He was convicted of fraud involving investors and banks, received a 25-year federal prison sentence, and died in prison in 2016.

Who Lou Pearlman was

Pearlman’s first businesses were in aviation, including blimp operations and charter flights, according to ABC News. The boy-band side of his career began when he saw the commercial success of New Kids on the Block and decided to build a group of his own. He moved his businesses to Orlando in 1991, formed the Backstreet Boys there, and later developed NSYNC as a second group.

His bands are the reason his name is still familiar. The fraud is the reason his name appears in court records and news archives. The two belong in the same biography, but they are different stories, and readers who want to understand the crimes need to see how the music profile was used.

How the music success supported the investor pitch

Pearlman presented his companies under the TransContinental name as a broad group of ventures. According to ABC News, the corporate group he described included an airline, a studio, talent and travel agencies, restaurants, and real estate. The visibility of the bands made that picture easier to believe, and the reporting says the image helped him attract investors, including retirees, into other offers.

The “employee investment savings account”

The offer that drew the most scrutiny was an employee investment savings account. ABC News reports that Pearlman described it as safe and said it was insured or backed by the FDIC, AIG, and Lloyd’s of London. Those insurance claims are what convinced investigators the offer was not what it appeared to be. Retired FBI Agent Scott Skinner told ABC News:

“Anytime we see the representation coming from one of Lou’s companies that the FDIC, or AIG or Lloyd’s of London was insuring it, we knew right then it was a fraud.”

Conviction and sentence

CBS reporting states that Pearlman was serving a 25-year federal sentence for Ponzi and bank schemes and that he had defrauded investors of more than $300 million. That loss figure is the reporting’s characterization, not an independently verified accounting total, so it should be read as a reported amount rather than a confirmed one. The sentence and loss figure have not been checked against a court judgment or a Justice Department release.

Death in prison

Pearlman died in prison on August 19, 2016, at age 62. CBS reported that no official cause of death had been announced at that time. Any later account of the cause should be checked against an authoritative source before it is repeated.

Keeping the music apart from the fraud

The bands’ recordings and touring success are separate from Pearlman’s financial crimes. Retrospective accounts describe his career as a mix of talent identification and fraudulent business conduct, and nothing in the reporting cited here suggests that band members knew about the investor scheme. Readers should not read Pearlman’s role in the bands as evidence of their involvement in the fraud.

Pearlman’s own account of his motivation is useful, but it is his recollection. In the 2000 ABC News interview he said: “I just didn’t know who they were and I was just questioning, ‘How could these kids afford an airplane?'” He added: “I was told these kids did $200 million in record sales and $800 million in touring and merchandising. I was like, ‘I’m in the wrong business.'” Those figures are what he said about another group, not verified financial statistics.

Questions about artists’ financial arrangements with Pearlman are a separate matter from the investor fraud. The reporting cited here does not establish the terms of individual contracts, so this article does not rule on them.
