Jagadish Chandra Bose’s scientific career moved from electric waves to biophysics and the responses of plants. Kunal Ghosh’s Unsung Genius: A Life of Jagadish Chandra Bose, published by Aleph Book Company, examines both the scientist’s life and his work. Scroll.in published an excerpt from the book on July 4, 2022; its headline calls it “the first complete biography,” a description of the book rather than an independently established bibliographic finding. What did Jagadish Chandra Bose study?
D. S. Kothari’s NCERT overview divides Bose’s research into three broad phases. The sequence shows how his scientific questions changed over time, rather than placing his work in a single field.
| Period | Research focus |
|---|---|
| 1894–1899 | Electric waves |
| 1899–1902 | A transition from physical to biophysical questions |
| After 1903 | Plant responses to physical stimuli |
Kothari’s account emphasizes that Bose built instruments for his investigations. Apparatus was not incidental to the work: it enabled him to generate, transmit, detect, and study effects that his research questions required. Read D. S. Kothari’s NCERT overview.
How did his work move from waves to plants?
Electric waves and experimental apparatus
Bose’s early research concerned electric waves. Bose Institute’s centenary history credits him with designing devices for wave generation, propagation, and detection, including waveguide and horn-antenna designs. The institute also describes his work in the context of radio communication and semiconductor devices. These are institutional accounts of his contributions; they do not establish that Bose alone invented modern radio.

Biophysics and plant responses
From around the turn of the century, Kothari’s chronology traces a shift toward biophysical questions, followed by work on how plants respond to physical stimuli after 1903. Bose Institute connects this phase with plant electrophysiology and credits Bose with instruments including the crescograph. Across these fields, instrument-making linked his investigations: he devised ways to observe and measure phenomena that were otherwise difficult to detect. See Bose Institute’s centenary history.
Why did Bose establish an institute?
Bose Institute dates its founding to 1917. At its inauguration, Bose described the institution’s purpose in terms that reached beyond laboratory research. As reproduced by the institute, he said: “I dedicate today this Institute – not merely a laboratory but a Temple – to the Nation.” The statement expresses the national and public ambition he attached to the institution; it is also a window into how the institute presents its own founding history.

Ghosh’s book is presented as a life-and-science narrative, while the Scroll.in page is an excerpt, not an independent review of the biography. The excerpt also quotes a Daily Chronicle correspondent’s description of wireless signaling, dated November 28, 1896. That passage is available here as quoted in Ghosh’s excerpt; it has not been independently checked against the original newspaper.
For readers who want to move from biography to Bose’s scientific writing, Bose Institute’s publication catalogue lists several collections. J.C. Bose and Microwaves – A Collection is described as a 164-page paperback of papers and historical notes. The catalogue description for volume 1 of Acharya J.C. Bose: A Scientist and a Dreamer says it reproduces 50 original research papers from 1895–1918. Its description of volume 4 gives a complete publication list of 128 research papers and 12 books. These are catalogue descriptions, not independently audited totals, and the catalogue does not verify current stock.
