Gary Boyle was a Patna-born British guitarist whose career moved from early rock and session work into jazz fusion with his band Isotope and solo recordings such as The Dancer. The “greatest guitarist you’ve never heard of” is a matter of taste, not a measurable title; Boyle’s case rests on the unusual span of his career and the distinctive route that brought him to jazz-rock.
From Patna to the British music scene
Boyle was born in Patna, India, and described himself as Anglo-Indian. His father worked for the railways. In a 2018 interview with The Scroll, Boyle recalled that his uncle Chick gave him early guitar lessons. He later borrowed his uncle Ken’s guitar to play at a youth club after seeing Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber on television.
Music was not his only early direction: Boyle was also working toward a career in civil-engineering drafting and playing small club gigs. The gigs eventually led toward professional music work, including with Brian Auger and Dusty Springfield.
How Brian Auger shaped Boyle’s jazz-rock path
Boyle credited his work with keyboardist Brian Auger with helping him recognize how naturally rock and jazz could meet. As he put it in the Scroll interview, “I blame Auger for jazz-rock.” The line captures Boyle’s own view of that influence, rather than a claim that Auger alone created the genre.

A session career across jazz and folk
Alongside leading his own group, Boyle worked as a session musician and recorded with artists from across the British jazz and folk scenes. AllMusic’s biography lists work with Mike Gibbs, Bert Jansch, Keith Tippett, Mike Westbrook, Norma Winstone and Stomu Yamash’ta. That range shows the breadth of his musical settings, though it does not imply that every association was equally extensive.
Isotope: Boyle as a bandleader
In the early 1970s, Boyle formed Isotope, a jazz-fusion band that put him at the center of a group rather than in a sideman role. AllMusic gives the original lineup as:

Boyle recalled that Isotope was signed to Motown in the United States. In the same 2018 interview, he also told an anecdote about Michael Jackson liking one of the band’s albums because it sounded “un-American.” That is Boyle’s recollection; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified statement by Jackson.

Boyle also taught music. In the 2018 Scroll interview, he said, “I taught for about 20 years in four different colleges,” and was still performing at that time. The interview documents his activities as of 2018; it does not establish his current performing schedule.
