Anthony Firinghee—also spelled Antony Firingee—is remembered as a Portuguese-origin Bengali poet and kobigaan singer. Uttam Kumar played him in the 1967 Bengali musical drama Antony Firingee, directed by Sunil Bannerjee. The historical figure and the film character are not interchangeable: the surviving biographical tradition is uncertain, and the film’s romantic plot is a dramatic retelling rather than proof of what happened in Anthony’s life.
Who was Anthony Firinghee?
Anthony Firinghee is remembered in Bengali cultural history as a poet-singer associated with kobigaan, a performance tradition built around poetic contests and verbal improvisation. Accounts describe him as Portuguese-origin, but that background does not erase his Bengali cultural and linguistic identity: his legacy is tied to Bengali song and performance.
The spellings vary. “Anthony Firinghee” is one form; “Antony Firingee” appears in the film title and in some catalog and archive records. These spellings refer to the same remembered figure in this context, not separate singers.
What is known—and uncertain—about his life?
Anthony’s biography is difficult to separate from folklore. A Scroll feature discussing the historical sources for his life notes that J. J. A. Campos’s History of the Portuguese in Bengal (1919) describes a “Feringhi” in a way that complicates a simple account of Anthony’s identity. The feature also raises the possibility that an anecdote later attributed to Anthony may concern his grandfather, who was also called Anthony. That is a warning about uncertain attribution, not a settled alternative biography. (Scroll)

What is kobigaan?
Kobigaan is a Bengali performance form in which poets, or kobiyals, engage in sung poetic contests. Verbal agility and improvisation are central to the tradition. Anthony’s association with kobigaan explains why he is remembered as more than the subject of a film: his name belongs to a performance culture rooted in Bengali language and music. The historical feature on Anthony discusses this context alongside the uncertainties in his biography. (Scroll)
Who played him, and what is the 1967 film about?
Uttam Kumar played the title character in Sunil Bannerjee’s 1967 Bengali film Antony Firingee. Apple TV’s India catalog lists the film as a drama and musical, with Bangla as its original audio, and gives its runtime as 2 hours 37 minutes. Its cast listing credits Tanuja as Nirupama. (Apple TV India)
The catalog synopsis describes Antony’s relationship with Shakila and the social boycott he faces. A reference entry characterizes the film as a reformist musical about a Portuguese-Indian who becomes a Bengali poet-musician. Those are elements of the screen story; they do not independently verify the historical events, and the synopsis name Shakila should not be confused with the cast listing’s Nirupama. How should the historical figure and film character be distinguished?
| Question | Historical Anthony | 1967 film character |
|---|---|---|
| What is the central association? | A Bengali poet-singer remembered for kobigaan; biographical details remain uncertain. | A dramatized portrayal by Uttam Kumar in Sunil Bannerjee’s musical drama. |
| What supports the account? | Reported historical traditions, including discussion of Campos’s 1919 history, with unresolved questions about attribution. | Film catalog credits and synopsis, which establish the screen version rather than historical events. |
| What should not be inferred? | A complete, uncontested biography. | That the film’s romance, ostracism or tragedy happened as depicted. |
A separate archive entry for the 1977 film Bhola Moira credits Antony Firingi and Bhola Moira among its lyricists and names Anil Bagchi for music. That is a different film, not a credit for Antony Firingee. (Bengal Film Archive)
