Raam Reddy’s Jugnuma, originally titled The Fable, is most compelling as a visual experience. In Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review, the film’s 16 mm photography and vintage colour treatment give its mountain orchard an uncanny, timeless beauty; the story’s increasingly explicit explanation of its mystery, however, weakens the fable-like ambiguity those images invite.
What is Jugnuma about?
Dev, played by Manoj Bajpayee, owns a fruit orchard that has belonged to his family for generations. Unexplained fires begin spreading through the mountain plantation, damaging the crop and eroding the trust between Dev and the labourers who work there. The film holds rational and irrational explanations in tension, with uncanny details—including fireflies and monks—giving the setting a fable-like quality.
Ramnath’s review focuses on how well the film sustains that atmosphere, and on the gap between its suggestive premise and the way its mystery is eventually delivered.
Where the film’s enchantment comes from
The review’s clearest praise is for the images. Ramnath writes, “Most of the enchantment is in the gorgeous visuals, and the feeling of timelessness evoked by them.” She reports that cinematographer Sunil Borkar shot the film on 16 mm stock, while colourist Himanshu Kamble’s treatment lends it a vintage appearance.

Ramnath describes the effect as “a lush, tactile quality rarely seen in Indian films.” The format and colour are not just decorative in her account: they help make the orchard feel suspended between the recognisable world and something stranger. Fire, landscape and the film’s uncanny figures gain much of their force from this carefully shaped visual texture.
Why the story does not fully match the imagery
Ramnath’s main reservation is that the film explains too much. As the mystery’s direction becomes clearer, suggestion gives way to a more explicit account, limiting the ambiguity that makes the orchard and its troubles feel fable-like. The tension is between the open-ended mood established by the images and a narrative that increasingly settles on explanation.

She also finds the dialogue stilted and the pacing irregular, with performances she characterises as serviceable. These are the reviewer’s judgments, not a claim about how every viewer will respond. For a viewer drawn to a meditative film, the slower passages may suit the atmosphere; someone looking for steadily building momentum may find them less satisfying.
Who may enjoy Jugnuma?
- Consider it for the visual craft: the strongest case in Ramnath’s review is the film’s tactile, vintage look and its atmospheric mountain setting.
- Go in with measured expectations for the mystery: the review suggests the narrative’s explanatory turn is less rewarding than its earlier uncertainty.
- Expect an uneven rhythm: Ramnath notes irregular pacing and stilted dialogue, so the film may be a better fit for viewers comfortable with a slower, less conventionally propulsive story.
