In Kalki’s Wind Storm, translated from Tamil by Nandini Krishnan, the prince receives a cryptic message directing him to be near Simhadhara lake that night. The scene ends before the message’s purpose is explained.
What happens in the excerpt?
In the passage published by Scroll on March 13, 2025, Arulmozhi Varman travels toward Anuradhapuram with Azhvarkadiyaan and Vandiyadevan. Vandiyadevan reflects on the prince’s humility and his considerate treatment of soldiers, commanders and people in the conquered territory. The scene contrasts Arulmozhi’s restraint with the violence associated with Aditya Karikalar’s campaigns.

At a Buddha statue, Arulmozhi describes receiving a silent message. He says: “The flowers at the lord’s feet told me that tonight, at the twelfth naazhigai, I must be near the Simhadhara lake.” That is the excerpt’s turning point—and its endpoint. It identifies a place and a time, but not who sent the message, what awaits him, or whether the meeting is an attempt on his life.
Does another passage identify a would-be killer?
Not conclusively. A separate English translation passage hosted by Project Madurai depicts the conspirator Ravidasa discussing operations in Kanchi and Lanka and ordering Azhvarkadiyan’s killing. Ravidasa also speculates that a “false prince” in Lanka may have a spy. That scene concerns a threat against Azhvarkadiyan and does not establish that the same person is targeting Arulmozhi in the Scroll excerpt.

- Ponniyin Selvan -Tamil Novel (Set of 5 Volumes)
How does this moment fit the larger novel?
Ponniyin Selvan is a historical novel set amid tenth-century Chola politics. Kalki Online’s overview describes a succession struggle involving the ailing Sundara Chola and his children, Kundavai’s efforts to bring Arulmozhi back from Sri Lanka, and Nandini’s opposition to the Chola dynasty. Those conflicts provide a broader backdrop of intrigue, but they do not answer the question posed by this excerpt.
According to Kalki Online, the novel was serialized from 1950 to 1954, later published as a five-volume set of over 2,000 pages, and concludes with Arulmozhi giving up the throne to Senthan Amuthan, who becomes Uttama Chola. Those are details about the full story, not revelations made in the lake scene.
Rank #2
Which English translation is this?
The Scroll excerpt is from Wind Storm, translated by Nandini Krishnan and published by Eka/Westland. It should not be confused with Penguin Random House India’s separate English series translated by Gowri Ramnarayan: Penguin lists First Flood as volume 1 and The Cyclone as volume 2. Penguin identifies Kalki as the pen name of Ramaswamy Krishnamurthy.
So the title’s question remains open within this excerpt. Its suspense lies in Arulmozhi’s unexplained summons to Simhadhara lake, not in a named assassin.
