Catherine, Princess of Wales (Kate Middleton), took Prince Louis’s sixth-birthday portrait in Windsor shortly before Kensington Palace published it on April 23, 2024. The release came while Catherine was undergoing preventative cancer treatment, and it attracted unusual scrutiny after news agencies withdrew an earlier Mother’s Day family photograph over digital-editing concerns. British media reports said the Louis portrait had not been edited.
The key facts about the photograph
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Whose birthday? | Prince Louis’s sixth birthday, April 23, 2024 |
| Who took it? | His mother, Catherine, Princess of Wales |
| Where was it taken? | Windsor, with reports placing the shoot near the family’s Adelaide Cottage home in Berkshire |
| When was it taken? | In the few days before the April 23 publication |
| Was it edited? | British media reports said it had not been edited; that wording is an attributed report, not an independently published forensic finding |
| Why was Catherine’s treatment relevant? | The portrait was released while she was receiving preventative treatment after cancer was found following abdominal surgery |
When and where was Louis’s sixth-birthday picture taken?
Kensington Palace released the image on April 23, 2024, the day Louis turned six. Louis was born on April 23, 2018. Reports placed the photography session in Windsor, near Adelaide Cottage, the Berkshire home where the Wales family lives. The timing was recent: coverage described the picture as having been taken in the few days before its publication.
The palace caption, reproduced in coverage by ABC News Australia, read: “Happy 6th Birthday, Prince Louis!” William and Catherine also thanked the public for birthday messages.
Why the portrait was released during Catherine’s treatment
Catherine announced in March 2024 that testing after abdominal surgery had found cancer and that she was undergoing preventative treatment. The reports covering Louis’s birthday did not identify the type of cancer. They establish the timing of the treatment and the family’s decision to publish the portrait, but they do not establish that the treatment caused a particular release strategy or reveal private motives.

ITV reported that the family published the image despite calls for privacy. Publishing a routine birthday portrait allowed the palace to mark Louis’s birthday without providing additional medical detail about Catherine.
Was Prince Louis’s birthday photo edited?
British media reports said the Louis image “had not been edited.” That statement was especially notable because several major photo agencies had withdrawn the Wales family’s 2024 Mother’s Day image after identifying concerns about digital manipulation. The earlier withdrawal prompted agencies and audiences to examine subsequent royal photographs more closely.

No public report cited here presents a technical, independent forensic examination of the Louis portrait. The careful description is therefore: news coverage reported that it had not been edited, while the palace presented it as Catherine’s photograph.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this particular birthday image received so much attention
It followed the retracted Mother’s Day image
The Louis portrait was the first new image of one of the Wales children released after agencies pulled the Mother’s Day photograph. That sequence made image provenance and editing unusually prominent questions for an otherwise ordinary birthday picture.

- The Little Prince (Wordsworth Collector's Editions)
It connected a family occasion with Catherine’s public health news
Catherine’s March announcement had made every new family photograph more consequential. The portrait showed the family maintaining a familiar public tradition while Catherine was receiving treatment, without disclosing the undisclosed cancer’s type or offering a medical update.
It was made by a parent rather than a named agency
The photographer attribution mattered. Kensington Palace identified Catherine as the photographer, giving the image a different provenance from portraits credited to William, another professional photographer or a picture agency.
