Lenny Stendig set off the car bomb that killed Merritt Grove. In The Diplomat Season 2, Episode 4, Margaret Roylin reveals that she told Stendig to speak with Grove because the conspirators feared he might confess. Stendig instead blew up Grove’s car. Netflix’s recap does not specify how the bomb was detonated.
Why was Merritt Grove targeted?
Grove had become anxious and wanted to meet with Hal Wyler. The conspirators feared he might reveal their role in an earlier attack, so Roylin told Stendig to talk to him. Instead, Stendig killed Grove in the bombing. The Season 2, Episode 4 reveal is the answer to the mystery left at the end of Season 1.

How did the car bombing connect to the ship attack?
The car bomb was tied to the conspiracy against the British warship HMS Courageous. Roylin says she ordered that attack and hired Russian mercenary Roman Lenkov. Her stated aim was to provoke national unity while Scotland’s secession movement threatened the United Kingdom. The plan was intended to damage the ship without causing mass casualties, but it went disastrously wrong: Netflix’s recap says more than 40 Royal Navy personnel were killed.
Grove, Roylin, and Stendig were involved in the conspiracy. When Grove appeared likely to talk, Stendig’s bombing of his car silenced him and became part of the cover-up.

Who died in the explosion?
- Killed: Merritt Grove and Ronnie Buckhurst.
- Survived: Hal Wyler and Stuart Hayford, both seriously injured.
Netflix’s Season 2, Episode 1 recap describes the initial aftermath; its Season 2, Episode 4 recap explains Stendig’s role and Roylin’s confession.
Was Prime Minister Trowbridge behind the plot?
According to Roylin’s confession, Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge did not know about her plan. Early suspicion of him is part of the show’s misdirection, rather than the eventual explanation of who ordered the ship attack and killed Grove.

What the reveal does not explain
The cited Netflix recap establishes that Stendig blew up Grove’s car, but it does not say what triggered the explosive or describe the device’s mechanics. Roylin sums up the conspiracy in the episode dialogue quoted by the recap: “It was a small plan, hatched in crisis, and everything that could go wrong did.”
