No published source establishes who owns every right in “Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast.” What can be documented is who is credited for the 1994 original in Mohra, and that in January 2026 the makers of Dacoit were reported to have obtained permission, and paid, for their use of it. Credits and a reported permission are not the same as ownership. The public record does not show who holds the composition, the lyrics, the master recording and the film synchronization rights today.
What the 1994 Mohra credits establish
The song comes from the 1994 Hindi film Mohra. Soundtrack listings on Moviebuff and IMDb credit:

Why a credit is not a chain of title
A Hindi film song is usually a bundle of separately controlled rights. The melody and musical composition can be owned or administered differently from the lyrics. The recorded performance, known as the master or sound recording, is a separate asset from the composition. A third, separate permission is needed when a song is placed into a new film. Each layer can have its own owner, licensee or administrator, and a change in one does not automatically change the others.

That is why the credits answer only the first half of the question. Naming Viju Shah, Anand Bakshi, the two singers or Venus Records does not tell a reader who would receive a licence fee today, who can approve a new use, or who would have standing to object to one.

The 2017 Machine version
A 2017 Scroll article describes “Cheez Badi” in Machine as a remake of the Mohra song, with its own lyric and music attribution. The same article frames the rights position as an open question. It is journalism, not a court ruling or a registry entry, and it does not show that the question was later settled.

The 2026 Dacoit use
In January 2026, Bollywood Hungama reported that Rajiv Rai, director-producer of Mohra, said the song’s use was legitimate. He was quoted as saying: “Its legitimate. There’s no breach of contract. I have given them the permission. They have paid me for it as well.”
Telegraph India reported the same month that the film’s lead, Adivi Sesh, said: “We made sure to acquire the rights properly because it mattered to me that this homage was done the right way.”

Both reports describe one specific use in Dacoit. Neither reproduces a licence agreement, and neither says whether the permission covers other formats, territories, platforms or later uses of the song.
Earlier musical roots
Scroll also links the Mohra song to “Dum Mast Qalandar” and to older devotional and qawwali material. That history matters for the composition question, because a melody or phrase with older roots may carry different ownership than a 1994 composition. Treat that history as context for the song’s origins. It does not establish that any one person or estate controls all later uses of the song or its lyrics.

How to check the current position
A reader who needs a definitive answer for a specific purpose can work through public records and then ask the rights holders directly:
- Composition and lyrics: search the repertoire records of the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS), which administers performing rights for music creators in India. Registrations there show who collects royalties, not who must approve a film licence.
- Sound recording: check the recording rights holder with Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), the body that licenses the public use of recordings in India, and confirm the label behind the 1994 soundtrack.
- Copyright registrations: search the public records of the Copyright Office of India for any registered assignment or work entry tied to the song.
- Film permissions: for a particular production, the only document that settles the question is the licence itself. Ask the film’s producers or the music publisher whether a written licence exists and what it covers.
Public searches may show nothing for a private licence, so a null result is not proof that no permission exists.
