Netflix’s documentary revisits the case and McNair’s football career, but the film’s questions about the circumstances are not, by themselves, evidence that the reported police conclusion was wrong.
What did Nashville police conclude?
TIME reported that Nashville police classified the July 4, 2009 deaths of McNair and Kazemi as a murder-suicide by Kazemi. That is the police conclusion as reported by TIME—not an independent forensic finding in this article. The police report, medical examiner’s file and other primary case records are not available among the sources cited here.
The distinction matters: questions about motive or circumstances do not establish that the identity of the shooter was unresolved. Netflix’s promotion describes the details as “perplexing,” and its Tudum announcement refers to unanswered questions. Those descriptions explain the documentary’s framing; they do not overturn the reported police ruling.

TIME’s account of the documentary says it explores the circumstances surrounding McNair’s death and reports that the film discusses relationship difficulties and financial stress. The directors described their aim as telling the story fully and objectively. Rodney Lucas said, “As brilliant as Steve was, when he was killed, he became just another black man who was shot dead,” adding, “This doc humanizes Steve.” Taylor Alexander Ward said, “Our goal is to just tell the complete story as honestly and objectively as possible.” Those are the directors’ statements about the project, not official investigative findings.

The documentary is also a sports biography: McNair’s life cannot be reduced to the circumstances of his death. TIME reported that he played 13 seasons in the NFL for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens. He led the Titans to a Super Bowl and won the NFL Most Valuable Player award in 2003, according to TIME.
