Who was Meredith Kercher?
Meredith Kercher was a 21-year-old British student in Perugia, Italy. She was murdered on 1 November 2007, and her body was found the following day. The case drew international attention after Knox, her American housemate, and Sollecito, Knox’s Italian boyfriend, became central suspects alongside Guede.
Who was convicted of Meredith Kercher’s murder?
Rudy Guede’s separate case
Guede was convicted of murder and sexual assault in October 2008 through a fast-track procedure handled separately from the cases against Knox and Sollecito. Italy’s Court of Cassation confirmed his convictions in December 2010, with his sentence reduced to 16 years. That is the final murder conviction described in the case’s legal history.
Knox and Sollecito’s final legal status
Knox and Sollecito were not ultimately convicted of Kercher’s murder. Their murder convictions at first instance and again at a retrial were superseded by the Court of Cassation’s definitive acquittal in 2015. The acquittal is the final outcome of their murder cases, not a temporary ruling or a merely procedural pause.

Why were Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito acquitted?
In its final reasoning, the Court of Cassation said there were no biological traces attributable to Knox or Sollecito in the murder room or on Kercher. The court considered a small DNA trace on Kercher’s bra clasp too scant to establish with certainty that it belonged to Sollecito and gave it no evidentiary value against him. Reporting on the ruling also described numerous traces at the scene and on Kercher as attributed to Guede.
The court criticized serious investigative omissions and failures. RAI’s summary of the written reasoning said the court considered further clarification objectively impossible. RAI published this English translation of its account of the court’s language: “The Court underlines the lack of an ‘evidentiary body’ characterized by ‘evidence beyond reasonable doubt’ and an ‘intrinsically contradictory scenario.’” The quotation is a translation, and the court’s assessment should not be stretched into a claim that the final ruling established every detail of an alternative account of the killing.

How did the verdicts change?

The sequence matters: saying only that Knox and Sollecito were acquitted in 2011 leaves out the order for a retrial and their 2014 reconvictions. The controlling final outcome is the 2015 acquittal.
What happened to Amanda Knox’s slander conviction?
Knox’s slander case concerned her accusation that Patrick Lumumba, a bar owner, had killed Kercher. It is legally separate from the murder proceedings. The Associated Press reported that Italy’s high court upheld Knox’s slander conviction on 23 January 2025; that ruling did not reverse or alter her final acquittal of Kercher’s murder.

What the final verdict does—and does not—establish
The legal record answers who was convicted: Guede. It also establishes that Knox and Sollecito were definitively acquitted of the murder. The final court’s reported reasoning focused on the lack of evidence establishing their material participation and on deficiencies in the investigation. It should not be presented as a complete forensic reconstruction of the killing or as proof of details the court did not resolve.
For viewers approaching the case through documentaries or memoirs, keep the source’s role in view: a court ruling determines the legal disposition, independent reporting summarizes it, and a participant’s memoir is a first-person account rather than a substitute for either.
