What happened to JonBenét Ramsey?
JonBenét was six years old when she was reported missing from her Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996. She was later found dead inside the house. Boulder Police report that she died by strangulation, and her death was ruled a homicide.
More than a quarter-century later, the case remains open. Police have not publicly identified a killer, and no one has been prosecuted.
Are there officially eight possible suspects?
There is no publicly confirmed police roster of exactly eight suspects. The number in the headline echoes the title of a 2016 Rolling Stone article. That is a media framing, not evidence that investigators officially designated eight people.

In 2024, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn told the Associated Press that police had “thoroughly investigated multiple people as suspects” and remained open-minded. Police have not named those people in their public updates, saying they withhold specific details to protect a possible prosecution. That general statement does not establish guilt by any individual.
What have Boulder Police said about the investigation?
December 2025 update
Boulder Police said investigators had conducted new interviews and re-interviews based on tips, collected new evidence, and tested or retested evidence in an effort to develop leads. The department said DNA technology continues to evolve, but did not disclose a test result or announce a newly identified suspect. Chief Stephen Redfearn said, “This case remains a top priority for our department.”

In its 2025 account, the department reported following up on more than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails; traveling to 19 states; and interviewing or contacting more than 1,000 individuals. These are the department’s published figures and scope.
December 2023 cold-case review
Boulder Police said an expert team had reviewed the case and made recommendations that police and the district attorney were evaluating. The team included investigative, analytical, and forensic experts from Colorado, including the FBI, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, and public and private forensic laboratories. Officials did not release the recommendations, citing the need to protect the investigation.

The department’s 2023 update described a digitized case file with nearly 2,500 pieces of evidence and roughly 40,000 reports, totaling more than one million pages. It also reported more than 21,000 tips, over 1,000 interviews across 17 states and two foreign countries, and samples from more than 200 individuals. These are figures from the 2023 update; their date and scope differ from the department’s 2025 figures.
What is known about DNA testing?
In 2023, Boulder Police said DNA testing had been performed previously and that experts were assessing remaining samples. The department said evidence would be tested when proven and validated technology could accurately test the samples available. That statement does not establish that a particular DNA profile identifies the killer.

Police reported testing and retesting evidence in 2025 but did not disclose results. The Associated Press reported in 2024 on a 2008 public statement by then-District Attorney Mary Lacy interpreting DNA evidence as indicating an “unexplained third party.” That was Lacy’s interpretation as reported by AP; it is not a present-day police announcement identifying the perpetrator.

Media accounts and competing theories are not the same as official suspect designations, charges, or proof. Public debate has also focused on the 1999 grand jury and later statements about DNA. The available public updates do not settle those disputes; claims about them should be attributed to their sources and distinguished from charges and outcomes.

When evaluating a claim about a person or theory, ask whether police officially identified or investigated the person, whether the claim rests on a primary record or a media account, what relevant evidence is publicly documented, whether contrary or exculpatory information exists, and what remains unresolved. The available public information does not support ranking named people as the “most likely” killer.
What can the public do?
Boulder Police continue to ask people with relevant information to come forward. Chief Redfearn said, “It is never too late for people with knowledge of this terrible crime to come forward, and I urge those responsible for this murder to contact us.”
