For a Primetime Emmy, the statuette goes to the eligible individual or individuals specifically named with the winning nomination—not automatically to the whole cast, crew, studio, or network. The Television Academy says it retains ownership of the statuette while the recipient possesses it for their benefit. A qualifying company may obtain a separate commemorative statuette for display.
Who receives the statuette?
The final winner listing for a category identifies the people who receive its Primetime Emmy. The Television Academy’s 2026 rules say the statuette is presented to the individual or individuals specifically listed with the nomination, and each eligible person credited with the winning achievement receives one. A show’s cast or crew does not receive statuettes simply because they worked on the program.
For a particular show, check the Television Academy’s final winner announcement for the relevant year and category. Nominee rosters may change before winners are announced, so the final listing—not an earlier nomination list—is the useful reference for who won.
Does the recipient own the Emmy?
No. Under the Television Academy’s rules, the Academy owns the statuette; the recipient holds it for their benefit. If a recipient or successor proposes to sell or otherwise dispose of it, the rules require the statuette to be returned to the Academy, which says it will store it in memory of the recipient. Physical possession does not mean the recipient has unrestricted ownership.

Can a network or production company keep one?
A studio, production company, or network principally involved in the winning program or achievement may seek approval to order a separate commemorative statuette for display. Under the Television Academy’s rules, one may be ordered per company per win, and it cannot be ordered for an individual. It is distinct from the statuettes awarded to the named recipients.
What about contributors who are not statuette recipients?
Some contributors who helped make a winning program but are not eligible for an individual statuette may receive other recognition. Television Academy rules provide for contribution certificates in applicable cases. For national awards administered by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), verified production staff who are not statue-eligible may receive contributor certificates or plaques. These are not individual Emmy statuettes.

Do these rules apply to every Emmy?
No. “Emmy” refers to multiple award programs, including Primetime, Daytime, News & Documentary, Sports, regional, and International awards. The answer about named recipients, possession, and ownership above describes the Television Academy’s Primetime rules published in 2026. NATAS national award rules have their own procedures: they describe one complimentary statue for each winning entry and allow individuals with eligible credits vetted by NATAS to order recipient statuettes. Confirm the administering organization and the rules for the specific program and year before applying details across awards.
