Wonder Man is Simon Williams, a former member of Baron Zemo’s Masters of Evil who changed sides, helped the Avengers, and eventually joined them. Marvel says Zemo’s ionic-energy experiments gave Simon superhuman abilities including strength, durability, flight, and energy projection.

Who is Wonder Man?

Simon Williams was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the younger son of munitions manufacturer Sanford Williams. Marvel describes him as bookish and interested in science. As an adult, Simon took over the family business, which struggled against Stark Industries. Financial trouble and embezzlement led to his prosecution.

Before Simon was sentenced, the Enchantress arranged his bail. Baron Zemo then offered him power and revenge if he would help the Masters of Evil defeat the Avengers. Zemo’s ionic-ray treatments made Simon superhuman, but also left him dependent on an antidote. Simon ultimately rejected Zemo’s plan when he realized Zemo intended to kill the Avengers. He helped them escape and appeared to die in the process; later stories brought him back.

Marvel identifies Avengers (1963) #9 as Wonder Man’s first appearance. The publisher’s reading guide also points to #151 for his resurrection and #164 for a story about his growing understanding of his ionic powers.

How did Simon Williams get his powers?

Simon gained his powers through Zemo’s ionic-energy experimentation. His initial role was not that of a willing hero: Zemo recruited him to fight the Avengers and used an antidote to keep him dependent. Simon’s decision to save the Avengers instead marked the turn toward heroism in his origin.

What are Wonder Man’s powers?

Marvel describes Simon’s body as permeated by ionic energy. Its character profile lists these regular abilities:

  • Superhuman strength and durability
  • Enhanced reflexes and stamina
  • Flight and the ability to leap great distances
  • Ionic-energy projection, including discharges through contact

The same profile says he can endure without food, water, or air, and does not age. These are fictional abilities as described by Marvel, not real-world scientific claims.

How his abilities have changed

Wonder Man’s powers have varied across stories. When they were destabilized, he gained additional effects such as changing his appearance, growing to giant size, firing beams from his eyes, exploding and reforming, and empowering others with ionic energy. Marvel says those extra abilities have apparently been lost for now, distinguishing them from his usual listed powers.

Is Wonder Man an Avenger?

Yes. Simon began as an apparent enemy recruited by Zemo, but chose to help the Avengers. His apparent death and eventual return shaped his relationships with the team and with his brother Eric Williams, who became the Grim Reaper.

Simon’s story is also connected to the Vision: Marvel says Simon’s recorded brain patterns were used in the Vision’s creation, and the two later developed a brotherly relationship. Simon’s close friendships among the Avengers include Hank McCoy, the Beast. His superhero career has also taken him through the West Coast Avengers and Force Works. Away from team missions, he has worked as an actor and stuntman, and his history includes a relationship with Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, as well as periods of uncertainty about his role as a hero.
