Travis Knight is an animator, filmmaker and LAIKA executive whose career moved from hands-on stop-motion work to directing feature films, including Bumblebee. The “plays dolls” line refers to how stop-motion is made—not to a verified hobby of Knight’s.
How Travis Knight built his career at LAIKA
A 2016 biography from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences traces Knight’s animation career to the late 1990s, when he began working on the stop-motion television series The PJs. The Academy says he later served as LAIKA’s head of animation before becoming the studio’s president and CEO in 2009. Those are the roles and dates given in that 2016 account; it does not establish his current title.
The Academy’s biography also credits Knight as lead animator on Coraline, and as producer and lead animator on ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls. These credits show a career that combined animation craft with broader production responsibility.
What “playing with dolls” means in stop-motion
The phrase comes from a description of the technique, not a report about Knight’s private life. In a 2019 interview, LAIKA Head of Production Arianne Sutner described stop-motion this way: “It’s like playing with dolls but moving one frame at a time and then [they’re] magically brought to life.”

In stop-motion, artists physically adjust models and sets between individual frames. When the frames are played in sequence, those small changes create the impression of movement. Sutner’s comparison is a vivid shorthand for that painstaking process; it should not be read as evidence that Knight personally “plays dolls” as a hobby.
From LAIKA animator to director of Kubo and the Two Strings
The Academy identifies Kubo and the Two Strings as Knight’s feature directorial debut. Its 2017 account reported that production took 23 months from start to finish and that animators made an average of four to five seconds of footage per week. Those figures describe that film’s production, not a universal stop-motion rate.
Rank #2
Knight described making the film at the Academy’s 2017 Oscar Week event as “the most incredible experience of my career.” The transition to directing let him lead a feature while drawing on the animation work that had defined his earlier LAIKA career.

Knight directed Bumblebee, according to a TechTimes profile published September 9, 2020. That film connects his stop-motion and LAIKA background to a large franchise feature. The cited profile gives January 2019 as the film’s release timing; release dates can vary by market, so that date should not be treated as a worldwide release date.
