The finale identifies the Stranger as Gandalf. The show explains Bombadil’s role in this part of the story, but it does not reveal what kind of being he is.
What does Tom Bombadil do in Season 2?
Bombadil meets the Stranger in Rhûn and becomes a guiding presence as the Stranger faces a choice: help his Harfoot friends or pursue the path of power associated with finding a staff. The Los Angeles Times reported that Bombadil tells him, “the staff picks the wizard.” The season finale confirms that the Stranger is Gandalf, making Bombadil a guide at an early stage of the wizard’s story.
Who plays Tom Bombadil?
Rory Kinnear plays Bombadil. About Amazon’s coverage describes this as the character’s first live-action screen portrayal. The series is set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; Season 2 premiered on August 29, 2024, and has eight episodes, according to Amazon’s season guide.
Is Tom Bombadil a Maia?
The series does not establish that Bombadil is a Maia, Vala, Elf, Ilúvatar, or any other specific kind of being. Those are theories, not confirmed identifications. Tolkien’s deliberate ambiguity is the clearest guide to the question: a reference page, Tolkien Gateway’s account of Bombadil’s nature, reproduces Tolkien’s statement that “Even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. Tom Bombadil is one (intentionally).” It also reproduces his comment, “I don’t think Tom needs philosophizing about, and is not improved by it.” These remarks are attributed to Tolkien on that secondary reference page; they counsel against treating any theory as settled canon.

How is the show’s Bombadil different from Tolkien’s character?
The key difference is narrative function. Tolkien’s character is an encounter in the story, while the series places Bombadil directly in the Stranger’s Second Age journey and gives him a role in shaping the Stranger’s decision. Showrunner J.D. Payne described the adaptation challenge by calling Bombadil “sort of an anti-dramatic character” who “observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it,” as quoted in About Amazon’s coverage. That describes his usual relationship to events, not a lack of importance; the series adapts that quality into a more active guide role.

Readers who want more of the character can turn to Tolkien’s fiction, including The Fellowship of the Ring, or to The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, a poetry collection. Amazon reported that HarperCollins planned a paperback re-release of the latter ahead of the Season 2 premiere; that announcement does not establish current availability or price in any particular region. About Amazon’s coverage also quotes HarperCollins Tolkien publishing director Chris Smith saying he hoped Kinnear’s portrayal would encourage audiences to learn more about the character and his adventures.
