It does support a few carefully qualified examples: Rory McIlroy has rejected claims of a falling-out, Woods described Mark O’Meara as a good friend in 2012, and Charles Barkley has said he and Woods stopped speaking. Those accounts differ in date and source, so they should not be mistaken for a verified current roster.
Who has been described as close to Tiger Woods?
Rory McIlroy
In May 2024, McIlroy rejected the idea that a disagreement over golf governance meant he and Woods had fallen out. He said that “friends can have disagreements” and fail to see eye to eye. A 2026 report described them as longtime friends, said McIlroy visited Woods after his 2021 car accident, and characterized their friendship as having grown closer in later years. These are public descriptions, not independent confirmation of their private contact today. Golf Channel’s 2024 report and The Sporting News’ 2026 account provide the dated context.
Mark O’Meara
In a joint CNN interview published in 2012, Woods called O’Meara one of his good friends. He spoke of their shared interests and said their relationship could grow while their competitiveness continued. That is strong evidence of how Woods described the friendship then, but it is not a current status check. CNN’s interview preserves Woods’s account.
Elin Nordegren
Woods and Nordegren are former spouses and co-parents. In a 2015 interview, Woods called her “one of my best friends now,” adding that the bond was because of their children. A quotation from his 2017 book likewise described them as having become best friends as they cared for their children. Later reporting describes them supporting their son at golf events in 2024–2026. This is a dated account of a co-parenting relationship, not an uncomplicated entry in a list of celebrity friends. Us Weekly’s timeline gathers the relevant remarks and later public appearances.

Who has said he no longer talks to Woods?
Charles Barkley
Barkley is the clearest reported example, but the claim is his account. Golf Channel reported in 2011 that Barkley said he and Woods had not spoken since Woods’s November 2009 car accident. Barkley’s disappointment at the time was connected to Woods dismissing caddie Steve Williams; that does not establish the status of Woods and Williams’s personal relationship.
In a 2026 interview report, Barkley said he no longer had Woods’s number and could not remember when they had last spoken. He also said Woods had “disowned us” after the accident. Those are Barkley’s recollections and interpretation; Woods’s motives are not independently established by the report. Golf Channel’s 2011 report and CinemaBlend’s 2026 interview report document his comments.

Why the headline’s two groups cannot be treated as verified lists
Public evidence of a friendship at one point in time does not prove that two people remain close now. Nor does rivalry, limited interaction, or a disagreement establish that people no longer speak. The available accounts identify only a small number of relationships with attributable detail; they do not support eight names in either category.
Rivalry is not proof of estrangement
Phil Mickelson and Woods have been described as archrivals who were not close. In a 2024 account, Mickelson said they might greet one another but would not sit and chat. That supports limited interaction, not a claim that they stopped talking altogether. Golf Channel’s report does not establish an estrangement.

A former professional relationship is not enough
Barkley’s comments about Woods dismissing Steve Williams explain part of Barkley’s disappointment in 2011. They do not, by themselves, show that Woods and Williams no longer speak. A personal-contact claim needs evidence about their contact, not merely a past work relationship or public disagreement.

What the public record can establish
- McIlroy denied that a 2024 disagreement meant he and Woods had fallen out; later coverage describes a longstanding friendship.
- Woods called O’Meara a good friend in a 2012 joint interview, a historical description rather than proof of their current closeness.
- Woods described Nordegren as a best friend in the context of co-parenting, in remarks from 2015 and 2017.
- Barkley has said they had not spoken since 2009 and, in a 2026 account, that he no longer had Woods’s number.
- The evidence does not establish a complete eight-and-eight roster or justify treating every rival or former colleague as someone Woods no longer talks to.
