The Stranger is Gandalf. The series confirms his identity in the Season 2 finale, so the question is no longer what the show might reveal but how it turns an unknown wizard into the figure audiences recognize.
When does The Rings of Power reveal the Stranger is Gandalf?
The confirmation comes in the Season 2 finale. The Stranger says, “Gandalf. That’s what they’re going to call me, isn’t it?” as he accepts the name associated with him. The line is the character’s dialogue, quoted in the Los Angeles Times’ October 3, 2024 report; it is not an interview quotation.
The reveal settled a question the show had kept open since its first season. In 2022, the finale identified the Stranger as one of the Istari—the wizards—but did not name which one. Gandalf was among the possibilities discussed at the time, not a confirmed answer. Season 1-era coverage reflects that uncertainty.
| Point in the series | What viewers knew |
|---|---|
| Season 1 finale | The Stranger was an Istar, but his identity remained unconfirmed. |
| Season 2 finale | He identified the name he would be called as Gandalf. |
Why the reveal is an origin story, not just a name
The series presents this Gandalf at the start of his development, rather than as a fully formed version of the wizard familiar from the Third Age. Patrick McKay, co-showrunner, described the intention to the Los Angeles Times on October 3, 2024: “We wanted this to be the origin story of a wizard coming to terms with who he is and what he has to do.”

That framing makes the Stranger’s uncertainty central to the arc. He has to discover his identity and decide what responsibilities come with his abilities. In Season 2, Tom Bombadil guides and challenges him; the Stranger’s choice to help Nori and Poppy and take up a staff marks a step toward that responsibility. Bombadil helps shape the journey, but the Stranger—not Bombadil—arrives at the name reveal.
Why did the show choose Gandalf over Saruman or a Blue Wizard?
Before settling on Gandalf, the showrunners considered other identities, including Saruman and the Blue Wizards. They said those alternatives did not fit the story they wanted to tell. Their explanation is an account of the adaptation’s creative choice, not evidence that Tolkien’s writings narrate the television series’ specific events.

McKay also said the writers’ Tolkien research led them to material indicating that Olórin had visited Middle-earth earlier than the Third Age. Olórin is the name associated with Gandalf before his arrival in Middle-earth. The showrunners used that point as a basis for imagining an earlier stage of his story; the series’ scenes and character journey remain the adaptation’s own dramatization. Vanity Fair’s October 3, 2024 interview with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay discusses their reasoning and the reveal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did Season 1 already confirm that the Stranger was Gandalf?
No. Season 1 established that he was an Istar, but deliberately withheld which wizard he was. Gandalf was a leading theory, and the season finale’s clues encouraged speculation, but the Season 2 finale is the point at which the series confirms his identity. Post-finale coverage, including TheWrap’s October 3, 2024 director interview, also treats the reveal as confirmation.
