No. In Megan Leavey, Megan and Matt Morales do not end up together. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite said she cut an earlier ending that paired them, because the film’s central love story was Leavey’s bond with Rex. The movie’s romance should not be treated as proof of a real-life relationship: the official biographies cited here do not establish a real Matt Morales or confirm a romance matching the plot.
What happens between Megan Leavey and Matt Morales in the movie?
The film does not conclude with Leavey and Morales as a couple. In a 2017 interview with the San Diego Reader, director Gabriela Cowperthwaite explained that she removed an earlier ending that put the two together. She put the emphasis instead on Leavey and her military working dog, Rex: “This isn’t a love story between Megan and Morales (Ramon Rodriguez), it’s between her and Rex.”
Was Matt Morales a real person in Megan Leavey’s life?
The official biographies cited here document Leavey’s Marine service, her partnership with Rex, and her later work with dogs. They do not establish a real person named Matt Morales or a real-life romance corresponding to the film’s story. That is a limit of what these sources document, not proof about Leavey’s private life; they also do not establish her current relationship status.
What happened to Megan Leavey and Rex after their service?
Leavey left the Marine Corps
A contemporary account from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton says Leavey left the Marine Corps in December 2007. She and Rex had served together in Iraq and were both injured in an improvised explosive device incident. A 2018 New York State Senate profile identifies their deployments as Fallujah in 2005 and Ramadi in 2006.

Leavey reunited with and adopted Rex
Rex later retired because of facial paralysis. On April 6, 2012, after ten years of service, he was released into Leavey’s care, according to the Marine Corps account. Leavey said, “We served in two combat deployments together, so we have quite a history.”
The figures reported for Rex’s service describe different things: the Marine Corps account attributes more than 11,575 hours of military working dog support and more than 6,220 vehicle inspections to him. A later Department of Veterans Affairs profile says Leavey and Rex conducted more than 100 missions. Those measures should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.

Rex died later that year
The VA profile says Leavey and Rex lived together for eight months before he died in December 2012, aged 11. The VA also reports that more than 22,000 people signed a petition supporting Leavey’s effort to adopt him.
What did Leavey do after the Marines?
Her later work remained connected to animals. The 2012 Marine Corps account reported that she was working with another military working dog, Patriot. A VA profile later described her as a veterinary technician, as did a 2018 New York State Senate profile, which also called her a brand ambassador. The Senate profile is a dated biographical snapshot, not confirmation of her current employment.
