There is no single Clue killer. In the board game, the murderer changes from one play to the next, because each game hides a new combination of suspect, room, and weapon. In the 1985 film, the answer depends on which ending you watched. The film was released with three endings, and the version that includes all three shows that more than one character commits a murder.
If you mean the Clue board game
The board game has no permanent killer. Each game is built around a hidden solution made of three elements: a suspect, a room, and a weapon. Players use the cards they draw, the clues they collect, and their deductions to work out that combination. Hasbro describes the current U.S. edition as a game in which players try to determine who committed the murder, where, and with what weapon.
How the hidden solution works
- At setup, one suspect card, one room card, and one weapon card are removed from the deck and placed in the solve envelope without being seen.
- The remaining cards are dealt among the players, so each player holds some cards that can be ruled out.
- On a turn, a player moves and makes suggestions about the suspect, room, and weapon. Other players show cards that disprove the suggestion, which tells the table what the envelope cannot contain.
- A player who believes they know all three elements makes an accusation. A correct accusation ends the game. An incorrect one removes that player from the deduction race.
Hasbro’s official product page for the F6420 U.S. edition puts the goal this way: “Be the first to make the correct accusation and win the game!”
Check your edition before comparing names
Suspect names, included pieces, and rules differ between releases, so the edition matters more than the general concept. Hasbro’s F6420 product page describes a reimagined U.S. board game with six suspects and a solve envelope. An older UK release uses different suspect names and a different player-count description. The table below shows what is established for each listing.

If you mean the 1985 film
The film, a 1985 comedy based on the board game, does not have one killer. Paramount’s official page lists Wadsworth alongside the other suspects as a possible culprit, but it does not explain the endings. The ending that matters for the question is in the version sold under the title Clue (with trilogy ending), which a licensed distributor lists as containing all three endings originally shown separately in theaters.
Rank #2
- Features a card-revealing mirror
- Who committed the murder in the mansion.
- Eliminate the suspects and discover whodunit, with what and where
- The mirror reveals the 3 answer cards
- Includes gameboard, card-revealing mirror, 6 character tokens, 6 miniature weapons, 30 cards (6 character cards, 6 weapon cards, 9 room cards, and 9 clue cards), pad of detective notebook sheets, 2 dice, and game rules. Ages 8 and up. For 2 to 6 players.
Three endings, so three possible answers
Theaters originally showed different endings. That means viewers who saw different cuts of the release were not necessarily shown the same culprit. If you saw only one theatrical ending, your answer is limited to that version.
The third ending
In the third ending, multiple characters commit separate murders rather than one. Wadsworth is revealed to be Mr. Boddy, and Mr. Green shoots him. This sequence is documented in a screenplay copy hosted by ScriptSlug. Paramount’s official synopsis does not describe the ending, so treat the detail as screenplay-backed rather than a studio statement.

Which version you watched
- A theatrical print with one ending: the answer is whatever that ending shows.
- The trilogy-ending home-video version: all three endings are included, so there is no single killer.
- A streaming or television copy: confirm which ending it contains before drawing a conclusion, since availability and cuts vary by platform.
Which question you are asking
For a board game, the answer is the hidden combination of suspect, room, and weapon in that game’s envelope, and it changes every time. For the film, the answer is a matter of which ending you saw. Both readings support the same practical advice: name the edition or the version before you answer the question.
