The rest of the order is much less settled: matchups, team fights and whether you value raw combat ability or strategic contribution can change the comparison.
How this Hashira ranking works
This list prioritizes each character’s peak demonstrated combat ability in the completed manga. It counts power-ups when they appear, distinguishes shared victories from solo ones, and treats specific matchup advantages—such as poison or unusual blood—as relevant to individual fights, not universal measures of strength. It is an interpretive framework, not an official franchise ranking.
The Hashira titles and Breathing styles identify their roles, but do not establish a numerical order. Official character material describes, for example, Muichiro’s unusually fast promotion and Mitsuri’s exceptional strength; those details help explain their abilities without settling every matchup. Official Hashira character profiles and SEGA’s character material identify characters and roles, not a complete strongest-to-weakest list.
The secondary manga-based ranking used here puts Gyomei first and Sanemi second. Its author summarizes the uncertainty this way: “Only Gyomei’s first place is firm. The middle changes with the question you ask.” That is an editorial assessment, not a statement from the manga creator or an official franchise representative. Read the ranking analysis.

The best Hashira, ranked by peak demonstrated feats
-
Gyomei Himejima — Stone
Gyomei is the strongest-supported overall pick. The ranking points to his frontline contribution against Kokushibo and to Kokushibo praising him as the best swordsman he had encountered in roughly 300 years. That dialogue is powerful evidence about Gyomei’s standing, but it is not an official leaderboard. The anime’s Hashira Training Arc episode titled “The Strongest of the Demon Slayer Corps” adds context, not a definitive franchise-wide ranking.
-
Sanemi Shinazugawa — Wind
Sanemi’s performance throughout the Kokushibo battle and his continued role in the fight against Muzan support a high placement. Both are group battles: the credit belongs to the participants collectively, not to Sanemi as the sole victor.
-
Giyu Tomioka — Water
Giyu fights Akaza alongside Tanjiro after awakening his Mark, then survives into the battle against Muzan. His feats support a place among the strongest, though the Akaza fight is not a solo win. SEGA’s character material also identifies him as the Water Hashira and describes his role in bringing Tanjiro toward the Corps.
-
Obanai Iguro — Serpent
Obanai’s marked, red-blade attacks against Muzan are central to his late-series case. The comparison needs a qualification: Muzan had already been weakened by Tamayo’s drugs, so those attacks should not be read as a direct measure against an unimpaired opponent.

Muichiro Tokito — Mist
Muichiro’s solo victory over Gyokko after awakening his Mark is a standout feat. His rapid rise is also notable: official character material says he reached Hashira rank after only two months of training. Together these make a strong case for his potential and peak, without proving that every version of Muichiro outranks every other Hashira.
-
Mitsuri Kanroji — Love
Mitsuri’s exceptional strength, noted in official character material, is paired with her ability to hold off Zohakuten during the Swordsmith Village battle. That contribution matters even though it is not a solo defeat of the Upper Rank demon.
-
Kyojuro Rengoku — Flame
Rengoku is an accomplished Hashira, but this peak-feat comparison places him below later marked fighters. SEGA’s character material confirms his Flame Hashira title and Flame Breathing. A ranking focused on unmarked ability could place him higher.
-
Tengen Uzui — Sound (retired)
Tengen’s Entertainment District battle is the basis for this comparison’s placement near Rengoku. The official Hashira Training character page identifies him as the former Sound Hashira and says he retired after losing an eye and an arm in that battle. A list focused on unmarked ability could also move him upward.

Shinobu Kocho — Insect
Shinobu ranks last here only on a narrow measure of direct combat feats—not overall usefulness. Official character material describes her skill in medicine and her use of special poison against demons. Her poison and planning contribute to Doma’s defeat, giving her strategic value that a raw strength list cannot capture.
Why the middle of the ranking can change
There is no single neutral way to compare a direct fighter, a strategist and a character whose best feats come in team battles. Change the question and the order can shift:
- Peak ability versus unmarked ability: Counting awakened Marks and other shown power-ups can favor later-series feats; excluding them could move Rengoku and Tengen upward.
- Solo victories versus team contributions: A solo Upper Rank victory can favor Muichiro, while shared battles should not be turned into individual wins.
- Combat strength versus strategic value: A direct-strength list undervalues Shinobu’s poison and planning.
- Matchups and special abilities: Poison, sunlight and Sanemi’s rare blood can affect particular fights, but none acts as a universal score for strength.
- Which late fight counts most: Giyu and Obanai are close enough that weighting their contributions against Muzan differently can swap their places.
- Manga-complete evidence versus anime-only evidence: Late-series manga feats may not yet be familiar to anime-only viewers.
These differences explain why the precise middle order is debatable even when Gyomei remains the clearest first-place choice in this comparison.
What the canon does—and does not—settle
The official character profiles establish Hashira identities, titles and selected traits, not a complete numeric ranking. The numbered order above is a secondary analysis of manga feats, not an official statement by Koyoharu Gotouge, Shueisha or the anime production committee. The cited ranking page reports its adaptation status as of September 23, 2026; anime and film coverage can change, so anime-only viewers should expect spoilers for material beyond the episodes they have seen.
