“Better Than Revenge” is widely rumored to be about actor Camilla Belle, who dated Joe Jonas after his relationship with Taylor Swift. Swift has not confirmed that. The link is a long-standing piece of fan and media interpretation, not a verified account of what inspired the song.
This explainer draws on TIME’s coverage from June 30, 2023 (updated December 1, 2023), The Washington Post’s report from July 7, 2023, and Taylor Swift’s official YouTube channel listing for the re-recorded track.
Who the song is rumored to be about
The song first appeared on Speak Now in 2010. Fans and media have linked it to Camilla Belle since then. TIME reports that the song was rumored to concern Belle, an actor who dated Joe Jonas shortly after he had been with Swift. TIME also reports that Swift never confirmed who the song is about, so the identification remains unofficial.
The relationship timeline behind the rumor
The speculation rests on a sequence of relationships that is well documented in retrospective reporting:

- Joe Jonas dated Taylor Swift.
- After that relationship ended, Jonas dated Camilla Belle, according to TIME’s 2017 retrospective (updated December 13, 2023).
- Fans connected that order of events to the song’s lyrics and its angry, jilted-girl tone.
That sequence explains why the rumor took hold. It does not prove that the song describes Belle or any specific real event, and nothing in the reporting attributes private conduct to Belle.
What Swift has said about the song
The Washington Post quotes Swift’s 2014 interview with The Guardian:
“I was 18 when I wrote that. That’s the age you are when you think someone can actually take your boyfriend.”

The comment addresses the song’s emotional premise and her age when she wrote it. It does not name anyone, and it does not confirm that the song is about Belle. Readers should not treat it as an answer to the identity question.

There are two released versions, and they differ in one concrete way: the lyric in the chorus.
| Version | Album | Release year | Disputed line | Subject confirmed by Swift? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original “Better Than Revenge” | Speak Now | 2010 | “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress” | No |
| “Better Than Revenge (Taylor’s Version)” | Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) | 2023 | “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches” | No |
Taylor Swift’s official YouTube channel lists “Better Than Revenge (Taylor’s Version)” as part of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). The Washington Post refers to physical copies of that re-release, so readers who want the re-recorded track can find it on the album itself.
For context on scale, The Washington Post reported in 2023 that the original Speak Now had sold more than 6 million copies. That is an album-level figure, not a measure of this song’s popularity or of the rumor.
Why the mattress line was changed
Critics described the original line as slut-shaming, and the re-recording replaced it. TIME reports that Swift had not publicly acknowledged the criticized lyric before the 2023 release. The Washington Post frames her 2014 comment as an earlier response to criticism of the line, but that comment does not mention the lyric change.
No direct statement from Swift on the reason for the edit is established in the reporting. Possible readings include an evolving perspective, a response to criticism, or an artistic revision. These are interpretations, and they do not settle the question of who the song is about.
Quick Recap
How to describe the song’s subject accurately
- Use “widely rumored,” “often identified by fans and media as,” or “commonly thought to refer to” when naming Camilla Belle.
- Say that Swift has not confirmed the subject of the song.
- Present the Jonas timeline as context for the rumor, not as evidence of the song’s referent.
- Avoid phrases such as “Swift revealed” or “the song is about Belle,” which go beyond what the reporting supports.
