He leads SERPENT, a group of mercenaries. The comics character has a different, longer backstory: Voelker becomes a leader of the Serpent Society and uses a teleportation cloak. The film’s portrayal and the comic-book powers should not be treated as interchangeable.
Who is Sidewinder in Captain America: Brave New World?
In the film, Sidewinder is Seth Voelker, a former military man turned mercenary. Giancarlo Esposito plays him, and he leads SERPENT. Director Julius Onah described Voelker as someone who used his military expertise as a soldier of fortune, rather than following a path like Sam Wilson’s. The Walt Disney Company’s February 13, 2025 coverage is the source for the film characterization and casting.
What are Sidewinder’s powers?
In the comics, Seth Voelker is associated with a cloak that lets him teleport. The Direct and Popverse recount a comics origin in which Voelker, initially a Roxxon employee, becomes a villain and forms or leads the Serpent Society. Popverse describes him as an economics professor who became a Roxxon analyst; The Direct says Roxxon assigned him to retrieve the Serpent Crown. These are comics histories, not confirmation that the movie’s Sidewinder can teleport.
The official film coverage describes the screen character as a mercenary leader but does not confirm that he has the comics character’s teleportation cloak. The Direct’s Sidewinder explainer and Popverse’s comics history cover the comic-book version.

What is the difference between SERPENT and the Serpent Society?
| Version | Group | Sidewinder’s role | Abilities established in these sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Captain America: Brave New World | SERPENT, described as a group of mercenaries | Leader | The official film coverage does not confirm teleportation powers. |
| Marvel comics | The Serpent Society | Founder or leader in the character histories cited | Teleportation via a cloak, according to the comics explainers. |
Marvel has used the name Sidewinder for more than one villain, so Seth Voelker is the useful identifier when discussing this character’s comics background. The group names are also distinct: SERPENT is the film organization described by Disney, while the Serpent Society belongs to the comics histories summarized by The Direct and Popverse.

Sidewinder is a prominent antagonist and the leader of SERPENT, but that does not make him the mastermind behind the film’s central plot. In a spoiler-marked article published February 14, 2025, TIME identifies Samuel Sterns as the mastermind. That distinction separates Sidewinder’s role as a visible adversary from the person behind the larger scheme.
